On 15 November 2024, the Vaal University of Technology’s (VUT), Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering (CME) department delivered donated school shoes to Phuthulla Primary School in Tshirela, Boipatong, as part of their 2024 outreach projects. Organised by the Social and Outreach Committee (SOC) of the CME department, this impactful initiative provided 70 pairs of school shoes to needy pupils, highlighting the department’s steadfast dedication to uplifting the community.
Among the 70 pairs, the Family Shopping Centre, located at 23 Voortrekker Road in Vereeniging Town, generously donated 10 pairs of shoes in support of the VUT CME initiative, facilitated by Ms Shonisani Muthubi and Ms Letsabisa Lerotholi during the procurement process. The store owner: Mr Mohammed Nabeel Vachiat expressed appreciation for the university’s efforts, encouraging staff members to continue with such initiatives to inspire learners to take education seriously, recognising it as the cornerstone of a brighter future.
The SOC delegation delivering the shoes included Mr Edward Modiba, Ms Shonisani Muthubi, Ms Khathutshelo Nemavhola, Mr Nhlanhla Nyembe, Ms Pulane Ranyali, and Ms Letsabisa Lerotholi (SOC Chairperson). The project was made possible through the generosity of individual CME department staff members, who personally funded the initiative, often using their family resources to ensure that the needs of the vulnerable were met. Despite facing numerous demands in their own lives, the contributors exemplified selflessness, proving that even small gestures can create a lasting impact.
During the handover event, Phuthulla Primary School’s Deputy Principal, Mr Arnold Dipitso, welcomed the SOC delegates on behalf of the school’s Principal, Ms Nnana Mooko. He expressed heartfelt gratitude for the donations, noting that they arrived at a critical time for learners who truly needed them. Accompanying the Deputy Principal was the school’s dedicated team, Ms Makose Motloung, Ms Audrey Mokone, Ms Mamotla Ramabolu, and Ms Mathapelo Lehlokoane, who had been instrumental in identifying the most vulnerable pupils and coordinating with the SOC.
Furthermore, as the event proceeded, Ms Letsabisa Lerotholi delivered an inspiring message to the learners, saying, “See yourselves in us. You can achieve what we have achieved in our careers and even surpass us. That is our hope for you.” Mr Edward Modiba also shared words of encouragement, thanking the school for their warm reception during exam season. He added, “We hope these donations bring you joy and motivate you to excel in your studies.”
The CME department’s efforts reflect the belief that “Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.” Events like this aim to create a positive ripple effect, improving the academic success rates of learners. Research shows that access to proper school uniforms significantly enhances a child’s sense of dignity and focus, paving the way for better academic outcomes.
Though the needs of the community are vast, this initiative demonstrates how little can go a long way in changing lives. By donating these pairs of shoes, the CME department has provided material support and delivered a message of hope and resilience to the next generation. As the event concluded, the learners expressed their heartfelt gratitude by saying in unison, “Thank you, VUT!”
