TRANSFORMING RESIDENCES INTO A HOME OF SHAPING TALENTS THROUGH SPORT

In May this year, the Living and Learning Department in partnership with the Central House Committees (CHC) organised a sports tournament that was concluded in ended later in September. The aim of the tournament was to promote healthy living and to sharpen the talents of residence students.
The Living and Learning Manager: Ms Ramaesela Phasha (Moabelo) stated that the residence management is proud to have women’s football in this sports tournament, and this is due to a motivation of victories that are drawn from the South African Female Soccer Team Banyana Banyana.
At this massive dorm tournament, Ms Phasha said that: “Sports tournaments provide our students with lots of entertainment and help them develop social traits such as love, unity, professionalism, understanding, patience, cooperation, and more group cohesiveness”.
The winning teams were the following:
Male Soccer – Phase 2 (Malema)
Women’s Soccer – Park Square
Netball – Vaal Stars
Basketball – Academy
The following was presented to the finalists and winners: Medals for the top 3 teams (65 Gold, 65 Silver and 65 Bronze); 4 soccer balls, two basketballs, two net balls; 5 large and five small trophies; Soccer gear for the male and female soccer teams; Netball kits; referees kits and t-shirts for the participating teams.
Ms Phasha applauded the Director of Residence and the Department of Student Support Services for the great initiative and success of the tournament.
“We will continue with more tournaments to help resident students. This initiative will assist students in distinguishing between effort and ability, while increasing self-discipline and awareness of the value of preparation through self-analysis of performance differences,” she concluded.
