VAAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY RETURNS TO FULLY-FLEDGED IN-PERSON GRADUATIONS
12 September 2022
Following a two-year COVID-19-induced hiatus, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) returns to its jovial fully-fledged in-person graduation ceremonies. The celebrations got underway this morning at the University’s Desmond Tutu Great Hall at its main campus in Vanderbijlpark and will run from 12th – 15th of September 2022.
With COVID-19 regulations now more relaxed, VUT first piloted the face-face graduations during its Winter celebrations in May this year where only parents were allowed inside the hall while graduates queued outside for their names to be called then leave soon after they receive their qualifications. This time, both graduates and their parents are allowed into the venue, allowing them to share in on this important moment.
At these Spring Graduations, VUT will celebrate the conferment of more than 1400 qualifications to graduates from its four Faculties: Applied & Computer Sciences, Engineering & Technology, Human Sciences and Management Sciences. Of these qualifications, 26 are doctorates and master’s degrees, 177 B-Tech & Bachelor of Education and Postgraduate Diplomas, while 1271 represent advanced diplomas, diplomas and national diplomas. This cohort of graduates is another contribution by VUT to the country’s knowledge edifice, ready to tackle the triple challenges of inequality, poverty, and unemployment.
In his congratulatory message to graduates, VUT Vice Chancellor and Principal, Prof Dan Kgwadi encouraged them to go out there with pride, knowing that they are as good as the rest of their peers in South Africa and elsewhere in the world. “Use the skills you’ve attained at VUT to make an impact in society. You are stepping out of a structured environment and entering a world that is much more unpredictable. It is up to you to structure your life in a manner that will drive you to excel. You are in charge of your destiny now!” he said.
Prof Kgwadi further encouraged graduates that as VUT alumni, their role in the renewal plan is to continue to serve the University as its brand ambassadors. “Your own success in your chosen careers will advance the name of our university. We will call on you from time to time, to assist in the generation of financial reserves for the university in order to benefit future generations.”
