The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) proudly celebrates one of its outstanding alumnae, Simphiwe Zwane, who hails from Orange Farm in the Vaal Triangle. Recently, Simphiwe was honoured as a top student for her Honours in Chemical Engineering at the University of Johannesburg. Her achievement is a testament not only to her intelligence but also to VUT’s commitment to producing quality graduates. As a trailblazer in her field, and known for her academic prowess and resilience, she continues to excel academically, showcasing remarkable results. Her journey from being a VUT graduate to an Honours student at a different university exemplifies unwavering discipline, faith, and perseverance.
Reflecting on her academic path, she shares that chemical engineering was not her initial choice. “I originally wanted to study pharmacy, but after that didn’t work out, I turned to chemical engineering, thinking it would be chemistry focused.” While it took her some time to adjust, she recalls that a third-year internship, where she produced biodiesel from waste cooking oil, sparked her true love for the field. “That experience opened my eyes to the tangible impact of chemical engineering,” she explained. Since then, maintaining high grades has been her personal way of making an impact, especially as a tribute to her late uncle, who pushed her to strive for excellence.
Her journey, however, has not been without its challenges. The loss of her uncle, her biggest motivator, led to a difficult period. She recalls, “My grades dropped, and I felt lost until I had a spiritual encounter with Jesus Christ. Since that moment, I’ve felt a renewed purpose, knowing I’m excelling for God’s glory.” This transformation has driven her academic success and serves as an anchor during tough times. “Knowing I have the Holy Spirit within me empowers me,” she says, crediting her faith as a crucial part of her resilience.
Choosing to pursue her Honours at the University of Johannesburg allowed her to challenge herself in a new academic setting, where she achieved top honours among her peers. “It was a test to see if I could excel in a different environment,” she admits, “and it showed me that with focus and discipline, success is possible anywhere.” This ambitious leap is further proof of her commitment to growing her knowledge and skills, not only for herself but as an example to other young women in STEM.
For Simphiwe, success isn’t just a personal milestone—it’s a responsibility and an inspiration to others. Her advice to students, especially young women, is both heartfelt and empowering: “Be prepared for setbacks and understand that God’s favour surpasses any obstacle. Philippians 4:13 has been my guide—I can do anything with His strength.” She also encourages students to lean into their faith and self-worth, emphasising that they possess all they need to succeed within themselves.
Balancing her Honours studies with a third year nservice training and her role as an Early Career Representative for the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), she relies on time management and a clear focus on her goals. Her commitment to IChemE also reflects her dedication to expanding her influence in the field, connecting with professionals globally, and contributing to initiatives in mining, minerals, and process control.
Achieving Cum Laude is a source of pride and celebration for her family and friends, who still fondly call her their “Cum Laude graduate.” While she humbly downplays the title, their pride in her accomplishments reminds her of how far she’s come. With her sights set on gaining more industry experience and possibly pursuing further studies, her story is a beacon of inspiration for students at VUT and beyond.
In celebrating her success, VUT recognises the hard work, faith, and determination required to reach such heights and wishes her continued success in all her endeavours. Her journey exemplifies the profound impact that resilience, discipline, and the right support can have on one’s academic and personal growth.
