VUT Alumni epitomises student-athleticism

Joseph Wambo epitomises what the Sport and Recreation Department strives to achieve in its mission to being ‘’Committed to an exciting, enriching and empowering out-of class living and learning experience that contributes towards healthy and well-adjusted members of society.’’

During his time as an undergraduate student, 2007 – 2012, he did a B-Tech in Bio-medical Technology and is at present completing his masters in the same field of study. He also works as a part time junior lecturer in Bio-medical Technology at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT). Joseph is an accomplished former volleyball player who competed for VUT between 2007 – 2014. He’s been a volleyball team manager for 8 years.

When asked about what he gained from VUT Sport, he said, ‘’Learning about the different local languages and cultures; being given a sports merit bursary which covered a portion of my tuition fees and also being able to travel around with the team. ‘’ His favourite volleyball player was and still is Isaac Maleka because he was disciplined, a hard working captain during his captaincy and to this day still promotes hard work and dedication to the current volleyball team.

When asked about individual achievements he could not name them all; he has numerous individual medals. His highest level of participation was at the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Championships, Volleyball Champions Cup (VCC), Volleyball South Africa Tournament (VSA) and the Johannesburg Volleyball Union (JVU) Cup. His highest achievement as a team manager was managing the VUT team which competed at the Zone 6 Championships in Zimbabwe in 2017.

‘’The top priority of a student-athlete is academics first and sport second. It’s best to have a qualification while doing sport because an injury can occur at any time forcing you to drop-out and causing an end to your career.’’

2007: USSA silver, VSA silver, Winter Splash Championship silver

2008: VSA silver

2008 – 2014 USSA gold

2015: USSA silver

2016 – 2017 USSA gold

2017: VSA silver

2018: JVU Cup bronze and Super Kids Tournament gold
