VUT Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering visits local school to inspire the generation of STEM enthusiast

In a bid to inspire and guide the next generation of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) enthusiasts, the Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering (CME) at Vaal University of Technology (VUT), under the facilitation of the departments’ Social and Outreach Committee (SOC), recently organized a noteworthy outreach event held on April 25, 2024 at Lekoa Shandu Secondary School.
The outreach event was a collaborative effort by VUT’s dedicated faculty members and enthusiastic students who believe in giving back to the community. The day’s event was a myriad of activities and educational sessions, aimed at motivating Grade 12 learners and shedding some light on the pathways to higher education and career opportunities within the field.
Ms. Letsabisa Lerotholi, a Lecturer within the Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering, conducted an insightful session on effective study techniques, emphasizing the importance of different study methods tailored to individual learning styles, equipping students with practical tools to excel academically. Mr. Moshe Mello, also a Lecturer in the same department followed with a compelling presentation on emotional intelligence and navigating challenges that arise from diverse backgrounds.
Another highlight of the event was the detailed overview of VUT’s admission requirements, and the array of qualification programmes offered by the University – this was presented by Student Recruitment Department. During this presentation, learners were also given a comprehensive understanding of the steps needed to secure admission at VUT and pursue their academic aspirations in STEM fields. The learners had a privilege to the meet with four current students at undergraduate and postgraduate level, coming from the departments’ student bodies SOCHES and METESSO, who shared their experiences.
On the financial aid front, the outreach learners were taken through the process of applying for scholarships and bursaries, underscoring their importance in making higher education accessible to deserving students.
Mr. Alfred Mbele, the school’s Science and Technology HOD, expressed his gratitude and hope for future collaborations. “We hope the relationship between VUT and Lekoa Shandu continues to strengthen. Today’s motivational talks will inspire our learners to improve their academic performance and make the right choices in life. We are grateful to have VUT visiting us today,” Mr. Mbele commented.
