On 28 October 2024, a group of dedicated second-year Public Relations Management at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) students successfully organised a heartfelt event at the Levai Mbatha Community Health Centre at Sebokeng in partnership with the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA). This initiative is part of the students’ curriculum and aims to provide practical experience by engaging with local non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
The event was a success, bringing together members of the rehabilitation facility for a day of fun and connection. The courageous group displayed great dedication by offering attendees food, stationery, cleaning supplies, and snacks, making them feel valued and cared for. The event began with a heartfelt prayer, which created a positive tone for the day. Students and rehab patients engaged in fun dance challenges, creating an atmosphere of laughter and togetherness. These activities encouraged participation and created a sense of community among all attendees.
One of the most touching moments occurred when participants were asked to write down something they were grateful for. Hearing their remarks read out was profoundly moving. One attendee stated, “I am grateful for the resources I have until I can fully recover.” This comment resonated with many, as numerous participants expressed their deep appreciation for the support provided by SANCA.
Mannila Msulwa, a social worker and representative from SANCA, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the students for choosing to spend the day with them and for their generous donations to the facility.
The day concluded with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction for the PR students and the attendees. The students not only met the requirements for their curriculum but also created lasting memories for themselves and the participants at SANCA. Their efforts exemplify the power of collaboration and compassion in making a difference in the lives of others.
