On 25 October 2024, the Vaal University of Technology’s (VUT) Marketing, Retail Business, and Sport Management Department hosted a retail webinar day themed “The Future is Retail: Embracing Change and Innovation.”
In attendance were invited guests, namely: Mr. Grant Jooste, Human Resources Director at Batho Pele Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMGC); Mr. Silonde Gumede, Category Planner at Game Stores; and Mr. Thokozani Thusi, Strategic Planner and Research Analyst at the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA), along with VUT’s Retail Business Management lecturers, third-year Retail Management students, and postgraduate students—all gathered to explore the dynamic retail landscape.
The webinar primarily focused on providing students with a comprehensive view of current trends and challenges in the retail sector, specifically from a Human Resources (HR) perspective. It also aimed to guide students on diverse career paths and opportunities in retail, equipping them for future success in this fast-paced industry.
The webinar opened with Mr. Lucky Mogwasa, a VUT Retail Business Lecturer, who set the scene by emphasising the importance of innovation in retail. He highlighted how the sector’s rapid evolution demands adaptability and creative thinking, essential qualities for anyone aspiring to thrive in retail.
From an HR perspective, Mr. Grant Jooste, spoke about the skills Gen Z needs to succeed in the retail industry. He emphasised that the retail landscape is shifting digitally, and those entering the workforce must be prepared to navigate this transformation. Jooste stressed that digital fluency, adaptability, and an understanding of the evolving employment landscape are vital for today’s retail professionals.
On the other hand, Mr. Silonde Gumede, offered a personal perspective on the retail sector’s importance to South Africa’s economy, noting that it contributes 20% to the country’s GDP. He encouraged students to cultivate the right attitude, noting that while skills can be taught, a positive attitude is essential for success. “Almost any skill is transferable; only people with the right attitude succeed in the industry,” Gumede stated. He advised students to stay informed about industry trends, embrace ethical practices, and remain agile in this data-driven industry. Additionally, he underscored the value of mentorship, lifelong learning, and prioritizing personal growth.
Adding another dimension to the discussion, Mr. Thokozani Thusi, showcased the vast array of opportunities available to those in the retail sector, from job placements to bursaries and learnerships. Mr Thusi encouraged students to look beyond surface-level roles and recognize the potential for diverse career pathways in retail, underscoring that there is much more to the sector than meets the eye.
Concluding the webinar, Mr. Roy Shamhuyenhanzva, a VUT lecturer expressed gratitude to the speakers for their valuable insights and noted the importance of continued collaboration with industry professionals. He highlighted VUT’s commitment to creating platforms that connect students with industry leaders, helping them gain practical insights and prepare for fulfilling careers in retail.
