Sharnel and Collins on their mock wedding day
On Saturday, 12 November 2022, the VUT community gathered at the Quest Conference Centre to bear witness to the sealing of nuptials between two students, Collins Mathadisa and Sharnel Maboe during a mock wedding – a first of its kind at VUT.
From the lobola negotiations that took place on the 10th, to the glitz and glamourous reception – everything was planned to the tee by mostly students and supported by the Centre for Academic Development (CAD), Student Life and Governance and the Office of the Vice-Chancellor.
In addition to demonstrating that one can find a life partner during their study years, the mock wedding also sought to showcase VUT talent, where fashion design students were responsible for the both the bride and groom’s traditional attires, while the deco and mouth-watering three-course meal were taken care of by the Bistro Catering Company. Live music performances were also rendered by VUT students, and the occasion was documented by VUT CampusTV, an initiative by public relations students.
Sharnel had this to say about the support received from the VUT community: “I would like to thank everyone who supported us. I feel blessed honestly. Let’s normalize being committed to our partners. Relationships are not about how long you have known your partner, age nor the years spent together, it’s about loyalty, commitment, love and most importantly, respect.’’
“I would like to extent my gratitude to the management of the institution for allowing us to showcase our talents and MaVuti community for showing up at the event. I know for a fact that they had an option of not showing up or simply saying no because of the weather conditions, over the weekend. Irrespective, they braved the weather and showed up and stayed until the event was done, “said the groom, Collins.
He added that he could not find words to express his gratitude to everyone for attending their mock wedding, saying that they made their special day even more memorable and fun by coming to spend it with them. “I got to learn that not everyone is the same, but there are people that truly care and want to see you succeed.”
We wish the couple well in their union!
