VUT Ubuntu residence revamped

Nestled within the heart of Vaal University of Technology (VUT), the Ubuntu Residence has recently emerged from a transformative journey of renovation. Situated within the university’s main residence, this cherished abode now stands as a haven for up to 40 male students .
According to Mrs. Faith Mocoancoeng, Acting Director for Student Accommodation and Catering, the decision to name the residence follows a benchmarking visit conducted by the Student Support Services (SSS) Directorate, led by Mr. Hlaso. Mrs. Mocoancoeng further alluded that the visit-initiated discussions and consultations aimed at aligning the residence names to reflect a more multicultural, inclusive living environment for students.
The previous names were sponsored by firms such as De Beers, Sasol, and Anglo Platinum, but after democratic elections and the new dispensation, some of these companies withdrew their sponsorships.
Mocoancoeng emphasized that the renovation of the Ubuntu residence was driven by two primary factors: neglect and financial constraints. “Over time, the buildings had deteriorated due to poor maintenance and limited funding. Recognizing the urgent need for improvement, the decision to renovate was made with the aim of providing students with safe, comfortable, and conducive living spaces,” she said.
As the freshly refurbished residence emerges, it brings with it a host of unique features and modern design elements that set it apart from its former state. Notably, the tactile experience of the newly renovated home is one of its most prominent features. Additionally, the meticulous finishing touches applied to Ubuntu play a crucial role in enhancing its overall appeal and functionality.
Mocoancoeng, pointed out that Ubuntu’s transformation aligns seamlessly with the accreditation standards set by both the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). This alignment, she said, ensures that the residence not only meets but exceeds the expectations of regulatory bodies, further emphasizing its commitment to providing students with the highest quality of living standards.
Ubuntu, in its new avatar, serves as more than just a place of residence; it fosters a caring community for those seeking a home away from home. However, according to Mocoancoeng the renovation process was not without its challenges, citing that the renovations took longer than anticipated, with a target completion date of December 2023. “This delay posed difficulties for the Student Accommodation and Catering department in attracting students to fill the residence, as many had already settled into private accommodations by the time Ubuntu was ready to welcome its occupants.”
