VUT Community Engagement Department at the heart of Community upliftment
The Department of Community Engagement at Vaal University of Technology in partnership with the Vanderbijlpark South African Police Service (SAPS); Ubaba Oqotho Mens Forum and Coca Cola Vanderbijlpark hosted a very successful Gender Based Programme for the Women’s Month on Wednesday, 19 August 2020. The programme is aimed at improving the socio–economic challenges and service delivery facing the Sedibeng region.
The programme was in honor of the Vanderbilpark Community Safety Members (VCSM) and Boipatong Itireleng Task Team (BITT), who have been volunteering their services through cleaning the surrounding environments and ensuring safety of the communities during this period of COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr Joseph Norman Radebe, Acting Director: Community Engagement and his team, have been coordinating and actively participating in these programmes. Programmes undertaken during the lockdown are, namely: the sanitizing of the Boipatong Clinic on 29 April 2020; cleaning campaign for Boipatong township and the conversion of an illegal dumping site into Community Park on 10 July 2020. This operation is conducted and maintained by the Boipatong Itireleng Task Team. Mr. Radebe and his team donated three grass bush cutters, tools of trade and a social relief intervention for the task team.
“I would like to send my profound gratitude on behalf of VUT to Mr. Tumelo Tshabalala and Mrs. Nikiwe Hoeana, the Station Commander at the Vanderbijlpark SAPS, for their commitment and dedication towards ensuring the successful participation of the VUT Community Engagement Department in these programmes,” said Mr Radebe. He further encouraged and challenged every staff member and students to be active citizens in ensuring a changed and prosperous VUT.
