“Lead with integrity, grow with purpose” said Ms Cholo Obasi

The Faculty of Management at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) was proud to welcome Ms Cholofelo “Cholo” Obasi as the guest speaker at its Autumn graduation ceremony. This occasion celebrated the accomplishments of Marketing, Retail, Business, and Sports Management graduates.

With over 25 years of experience in the marketing industry, Cholo Obasi is an independent consultant whose career spans strategic marketing, brand development, and market expansion. Before consulting, she held senior roles at major organisations, including MultiChoice, Old Mutual, and MTN. She is also a Chartered Marketer and a board member of the Marketing Association of South Africa and the Marketing Research Foundation of South Africa.

Obasi’s passion for the African continent shines through not only in her work but in her life journey. She has travelled extensively, working across borders, including a term as an expatriate in Nigeria. Her diverse background and global exposure enable her to bring a unique perspective to marketing solutions and professional development.

Addressing the graduates, Obasi began by recognising the significance of the day. And stated that “today, we stand together, proud of the achievements of the Marketing, Retail, Business and Sports Management students. Congratulations on completing your diploma and degree at the Vaal University of Technology.”

She continued: “You are embarking on a new path, one that is full of endless opportunities and possibilities. It’s a path about solving real-life problems, often with little guidance, and the pace and pressure will differ from what you’re used to.”

She reminded graduates that VUT is among the top universities in the country that received the most applications for the 2025 academic year, a testament to the institution’s growing reputation.

In her keynote, Obasi offered practical advice to graduates preparing to enter the world of work and encouraged graduates to represent their families, communities and the institution with integrity by understanding workplace policies, showing respect, primarily to support staff, and being punctual. Success, they were reminded, is built through teamwork, adaptability, and continuous growth. Ms Obasi emphasised the importance of leaving a positive legacy, valuing others, and making wise, accountable decisions that shape one’s career journey.

Closing her message, Ms Obasi left graduates with a lasting thought: “Today is a proud moment for us all. Go and make your mark on the world. Hold yourself accountable, and never forget the power of integrity, empathy, and perseverance.”

Ms Obasi’s words were more than just advice; they were a roadmap for graduates ready to take on the future confidently and purposefully.
