The spirit of camaraderie, wellness, and celebration filled the Vaal University of Technology’s (VUT) Isak Steyl Stadium on 31 October 2025 as staff gathered for the highly anticipated VUT Staff Sports Fun Day. The event, held under the theme “Active Minds, Healthy Bodies, Connected Teams,” celebrated fitness, fellowship, and unity across the university community, delivering a memorable day that blended sport, creativity, music, and shared campus pride.
The bright morning atmosphere set the tone as staff arrived dressed in vibrant sportswear and their maVUTi gear, ready to embrace a day of active fun. With camp chairs in hand and excitement in the air, teams warmed up for friendly competitions that encouraged movement, laughter, and interdepartmental bonding.
In his opening remarks, VUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Khehla Ndlovu, highlighted the significance of the Fun Day as a moment of connection, balance, and collective well-being. He emphasised that the theme “Active Minds, Healthy Bodies, Connected Teams” reflects the essence of institutional excellence, reminding staff that mental sharpness and physical health work hand in hand to drive collaboration, creativity, and a strong university community.
Professor Ndlovu encouraged staff to use the day to reconnect beyond job titles and daily pressures, noting that wellness is not a luxury, but a leadership priority aligned with Strategy 2033+. He described the event as an opportunity to renew energy, strengthen relationships, and reaffirm VUT as a community that values both achievement and humanity. He thanked the organising team for their commitment and urged staff to carry the spirit of unity, joy, and teamwork into the rest of the academic year.
From lawn games to light-hearted relays, staff members immersed themselves in a programme that catered to all energy levels. Many participants expressed how refreshing it was to step outside their offices and reconnect with colleagues through sport and teamwork.
Administrators from the Internationalisation Department, Ms Lydia Mosese and Ms Lesego Kgaswe, remarked: “This day reminded us that wellness isn’t just physical; it’s also about connecting, laughing, and creating memories with colleagues we don’t always get to see.”
The stadium echoed with cheers and friendly rivalry, with teams celebrating each other’s efforts as much as their own victories. Whether on the field or cheering from the stands, every staff member contributed to the lively and inclusive atmosphere.
A highlight of the day was the live performance by Acatears, whose energy, talent, and stage presence captivated the crowd and elevated the celebratory mood.
Beyond the activities, the event reinforced VUT’s commitment to cultivating a healthy, motivated, and connected workforce. The Fun Day reminded staff that wellness extends beyond physical fitness, encompassing emotional well-being, social cohesion, and a sense of belonging within the institution.
Despite the logistical challenges that often accompany large-scale events, the organising team confirmed that this year’s Fun Day was a resounding success. Co-leader of the organising committee, Ms Palesa Ubane, reflected on both the challenges and triumphs behind the scenes: “The organising of the event was challenging, particularly with the JOC requirements. But thanks to the Vice-Chancellor and his team, we received all the support we needed. Their commitment ensured that the event came together smoothly, and that staff could enjoy a memorable day.”
Her sentiments echoed the appreciation expressed by staff across the university, who commended the Events Coordination Committee for delivering a well-executed, uplifting, and inclusive day for the VUT community.
Departments that seldom interact had the chance to collaborate, forge new friendships, and strengthen professional relationships. Staff walked away with a renewed sense of unity and a deeper appreciation for the diverse community that drives the university forward.
As the sun set over the Isak Steyl Stadium, one sentiment resonated among participants: the Fun Day was not only enjoyable but profoundly meaningful.
With its blend of sport, music, fellowship, and celebration, the 2025 VUT Staff Sports Fun Day successfully delivered on its promise, a day for the VUT community to recharge, reconnect, and celebrate what it truly means to be part of the VUT family.
