Ten staff members from various departments at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) completed a two-day First Aid Level 1 training programme on 28 and 29 October 2026 at the VUT Conference Centre.

Conducted by the Institute of Emergency First Aiders and facilitated by Mr Thulani Gili, the programme equipped participants with basic first aid knowledge and practical skills to respond to workplace injuries and medical emergencies.

The training also helped participants build confidence in assisting colleagues and others, strengthening emergency preparedness across the University.

Reflecting on his experience, Mr Makobatjatji Lekgau, Public Relations Intern in the Marketing and Communication Department, described the programme as a valuable learning opportunity.

“Thank you for the opportunity to participate in the First Aid Level 1 Training. The training was informative and valuable, equipping me with essential first-aid knowledge and practical skills to respond to emergencies. I have gained confidence in handling basic first aid situations, and I intend to apply the knowledge acquired to assist colleagues and contribute towards maintaining a safe and healthy working environment at VUT,” he said.

Ms Jacorina Diergaardt, Administrator at the French Southern African Schneider Electric Education Centre (FSASEC), thanked the Health and Safety Department for facilitating the training.

“The training was highly informative and beneficial, and I gained valuable knowledge and practical skills that I can apply effectively. I truly appreciate the time, effort and expertise invested in presenting the course. It was an enriching learning experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to participate,” she said.

Mr Zachariah Motaung, Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Officer, emphasised the importance of training employees across departments to support the University’s occupational health and safety efforts.

“Equipping employees with first aid knowledge and practical skills enhances the University’s ability to respond effectively to workplace injuries and medical emergencies.

The participation of trained staff across different departments strengthens workplace emergency preparedness and promotes a culture of shared responsibility for the safety and well-being of all employees,” he said.

By extending first aid skills beyond designated health and safety personnel, the programme strengthens VUT’s capacity to respond to emergencies and enables more employees to contribute to the well-being of the University community.
