For many students, balancing academic demands with competitive sport can be a challenge. For Mr Oratilwe Mosa Rafube, discipline, focus and determination helped him succeed in both.
Mr Rafube recently graduated with a Diploma in Internal Auditing during the Vaal University of Technology’s (VUT) Spring Graduation ceremonies held on 16 September 2026 at the Vanderbijlpark Campus.
Born and raised in the Vaal, Mr Rafube chose to pursue Internal Auditing after developing an interest in economics and Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) during his school years. Inspired by the success of graduates from his community, he enrolled at VUT with the goal of building a career in the financial sector.
Throughout his studies, Mr Rafube balanced the demands of academic life with his commitment to sport as a member of the VUT soccer team.
His passion for football began at an early age and was inspired by his uncle, former Vaal Professionals player Zimba. While pursuing his qualification, he had to manage lectures, assignments and examinations alongside training sessions and competitive matches.
Reflecting on how he maintained this balance, Mr Rafube attributed his success to discipline, hard work and a clear sense of purpose.
“I did not procrastinate. I prayed, stayed focused and always knew what I wanted in life,” he said.
Mr Rafube also credited his family for providing encouragement throughout his academic journey. He acknowledged the role played by his lecturers and coaches in helping him remain motivated and committed to achieving his goals.
In particular, he expressed gratitude to Mr Duncan Dipuo, an Internal Auditing lecturer, and Coach Manando Thando Mayakeni for their guidance and support.
With his diploma now completed, Mr Rafube has set his sights on furthering his studies through an Advanced Diploma before pursuing a career in the corporate sector.
He hopes his journey will inspire other students to believe that academic success and sporting excellence can go hand in hand.
Offering advice to students who are juggling similar commitments, Mr Rafube emphasised the importance of staying focused and disciplined.
“It requires focus and knowing what you want in life. Do not do the things that your other friends are doing. If you are involved in sport, you need to take care of yourself and remain committed to your goals,” he said.
“In all you do, remain disciplined and pray.”
As VUT celebrates its 60th Diamond Jubilee year, graduates such as Mr Rafube demonstrate that success is not only measured by academic achievement, but also by the determination and resilience developed along the journey. His story reflects how dedication, family support and a clear vision for the future can help students excel both in the classroom and on the field.
