Five lanes forward: Prof Oosthuizen’s journey to Associate Professor

The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) proudly continues its Staff Promotion Recognition Series by celebrating Prof Oosthuizen of the Department of Tourism and Integrated Communication in the Faculty of Human Sciences. Her promotion from Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor marks a significant milestone, one that reflects scholarly growth, sustained academic contribution, and the strengthening of women’s leadership within higher education.

Prof Delia Oosthuizen first learned of her promotion in an unexpected way. “The team from Human Resources (HR) was unable to reach me in my office, as I was on leave. I then saw the notice on the e-communications,” she shares.

Beyond the moment itself, the milestone carries deeper meaning. “The promotion represents a strategic shift in my path. It allows for formal recognition of my academic leadership, and most importantly, it reflects scholarly maturity, the ability to lead, influence, and contribute to research and student development during supervision.”

Her journey began in 1994 as a student. Over the years, she has evolved from mastering classroom teaching to embracing research, programme coordination, and academic quality assurance. The transition to Associate Professor, she describes metaphorically:

“The highway has shifted from two lanes to five lanes. The opportunities become endless.”

As a woman academic navigating the demands of teaching, research, supervision, and leadership, her progression reflects resilience, intentional development, and the steady building of scholarly authority.

Prof Oosthuizen’s core research interests centre on food waste management, sustainability, and nutrition within vulnerable and resource constrained communities.

Her work bridges hospitality and food service industries with community development imperatives, ensuring that research remains relevant, applied, and socially responsive.

“My commitment to community development contributes to the societal issues we face daily. Empowering others will improve quality of life,” she explains.

Her research directly supports Strategy 2033+ at VUT, with its focus on sustainability, industry engagement, and societal impact. By integrating practice-based interventions into academic inquiry, she ensures that students engage with real world challenges while strengthening industry partnerships.

A measurable achievement in her academic journey includes supervising and mentoring postgraduate students, actively encouraging them to publish and present at conferences, and strengthening postgraduate throughput and research output within the department. She has consistently supported students in producing scholarly outputs, contributing to a growing culture of research participation.

“Students must be positive and become the change makers of tomorrow,” she says. “Meaningful research impact is about meaningful knowledge production, postgraduate throughput, and industry engagement.”

Her scholarly identity has evolved accordingly. “I have shifted from focusing only on content delivery to integrating research, teaching, leadership, and community engagement. I see scholars as producers of the next generation of researchers.”

Beyond the lecture hall, Prof Oosthuizen’s leadership has contributed to programme coordination, departmental development, and structured community engagement initiatives. Her approach reflects a deep commitment to institutional strengthening.

She advocates for structured mentorship programmes to boost research confidence and output quality, particularly for early career academics.

“Promotion is not achieved through isolated activities, but through sustained and coherent contributions across teaching, research, supervision, and service,” she advises.

She further emphasises the importance of streamlining administrative processes, such as MOU development, to enhance collaborative research opportunities. By reducing bureaucratic barriers, she believes the University can accelerate portfolio development and research partnerships.

Her commitment to postgraduate supervision remains central.

“Postgraduate supervision is the backbone of a sustainable research culture. It does not only rely on dissertation completion, but on sharing knowledge through publications and conferences.”

Through mentorship and structured guidance, she contributes directly to Strategy 2033+ priorities of research intensification, capacity development, and sustainable academic excellence.

Looking ahead, Prof Oosthuizen envisions expanding research collaborations nationally and internationally, particularly in sustainability and community-based development.

“Expanding research collaboration means becoming more strategic rather than incidental,” she explains. “It means co-authoring outputs and assisting with supervisory initiatives at both national and international levels.”

Over the next five years, she aims to deepen her engagement with postgraduate students by providing structured mentorship, fostering research skills, and guiding them toward successful completion and publication.

“I aspire to cultivate an environment of respect, integrity, and collaboration, where those around me feel empowered to excel.”

Her forward vision aligns closely with Strategy 2033+ at VUT, strengthening the research culture, enhancing postgraduate throughput, and advancing community engaged scholarship.

At this stage of her career, academic excellence carries a profound meaning. “Academic excellence is about delivering quality, relevant, and sustainable contributions. It is not about how much I achieve personally, but about the academic community and research culture I help create.”

In celebrating Prof Oosthuizen’s promotion, VUT recognises not only an accomplished Associate Professor, but a woman scholar whose leadership, mentorship, and commitment to sustainability continue to shape the University’s academic future, one student, one research output, and one partnership at a time.
