From the heart of the Vaal to academic heights, Ms Makhetha Modiehi rises as VUT’s top Logistics student

There are moments in a graduation season where the applause carries a little more weight, where a name called to the stage represents more than academic achievement. On 24 April 2026, during the Autumn Graduation Ceremonies at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), Ms Makhetha Modiehi stepped forward as the overall top student in the Diploma in Logistics, graduating cum laude as part of the University’s 60th generation of graduates. Her moment was not defined by marks alone, but by the life she carried alongside her studies.

A resident of the Vaal, Ms Modiehi’s journey is rooted in both place and purpose. For her, success did not arrive suddenly. It was built over time, shaped by discipline, routine, and the quiet determination to see things through, even when the demands of life pressed in from every side.

“It means all my hard work is showing. I am finally reaping what I was sowing, the sleepless nights and the discipline,” said Ms Modiehi, reflecting on the moment. “It means a lot to be making my mother and my daughter proud.” Her words carry the weight of responsibility, not only to herself, but to those who depend on her and believe in her.

Balancing motherhood with academic life required more than good intentions. It demanded structure and sacrifice. Ms Modiehi built her success around a disciplined routine, often rising in the early hours of the morning to study while the world around her was still quiet. Those moments, carved out before the day began, became the foundation of her consistency.

Yet, even that discipline was tested. During her third year, at a time when academic pressure was at its peak, she experienced the loss of her grandmother, a figure she describes as central to her educational journey. The grief was real and immediate, threatening to interrupt everything she had worked towards.

Rather than allowing that loss to define the outcome, Ms Modiehi chose to carry it differently. She turned it into purpose.

“She was such a significant figure in my going to school. I knew she would want me to carry on and finish it the way I started,” she said, capturing the quiet strength that guided her through one of the most difficult periods of her life.

Now continuing with her Advanced Diploma in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Ms Modiehi remains focused on building a future within the industry. While she has already gained

exposure through a three-month internship, her journey is still unfolding, shaped by both ambition and a willingness to keep learning.

What stands out in her story is not only what she achieved, but how she understands the journey itself. She speaks openly about self-doubt, about moments where belief had to be rebuilt, and about the mindset required to move forward.

“One lesson I learned is that you can do anything. I sometimes doubted myself, but it is all in the mindset. You can achieve anything if you sacrifice and give your all to it,” she said.

As part of VUT’s 60th generation of graduates, Ms Modiehi’s story adds depth to the broader narrative of what this milestone represents. It is not only about qualifications awarded, but about the lives behind them. Individuals who navigate responsibility, loss, and expectation, and still find a way to succeed.

Her journey is a reminder that academic excellence is rarely about talent alone. It is about consistency, resilience, and the courage to continue when the path becomes uncertain. In moving from top student to emerging professional, Ms Modiehi carries more than a qualification. She carries a story that speaks to the strength of the Vaal community and the enduring spirit of those who rise from it.
