As Vaal University of Technology (VUT) celebrates 60 years of Inspiring Thought and Shaping Talent, the achievements of its alumni continue to reflect the University’s lasting impact on society and industry. Among them is Mr Victor Shokane, whose journey from a VUT student to a respected industry leader and entrepreneur demonstrates the value of perseverance, lifelong learning, and a willingness to embrace new opportunities.

Today, Mr Shokane serves as Head of Administration at the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), where he is responsible for Facilities Management, Procurement, and Fleet Management within his region. It is a role that requires strategic thinking, leadership, and sound decision-making, qualities he began developing during his years at VUT.

Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Mr Shokane has also built a successful logistics and transport business, balancing entrepreneurship with a demanding professional career. His ability to thrive in both environments speaks to the adaptability and practical skills he has developed over the years.

A graduate of the then Vaal Triangle Technikon, now Vaal University of Technology, Mr Shokane obtained a B.Tech in Purchasing Management in __. He credits his studies with providing the strong foundation that continues to guide him in his career today.

“The knowledge I gained at VUT continues to influence my work every day. The practical approach to learning equipped me with skills that remain relevant in the workplace,” he says.

Mr Shokane’s decision to study at VUT was influenced by recommendations from friends and peers who recognised the institution’s reputation for quality education. What began as a pursuit of a qualification soon became a transformative experience that helped shape both his professional journey and personal growth.

“VUT gave me more than a qualification. It gave me lifelong friendships, valuable networks, and relationships that later developed into business partnerships,” he recalls.

Looking back on his student years, Mr Shokane remembers a vibrant campus environment, supportive lecturers, and fellow students who shared the same ambitions and aspirations. Those experiences helped prepare him for the realities of the workplace and the challenges that would follow in his career.

Over the years, he has learnt that success is not achieved overnight. It is built through consistency, hard work, and the courage to keep moving forward even when circumstances seem difficult.

As VUT marks six decades of academic excellence and innovation, Mr Shokane believes the University has an important role to play in preparing graduates for a rapidly changing world. He

advocates for stronger collaboration between industry and academia, particularly through workplace exposure and practical learning opportunities.

“Industry partnerships are essential. Students need opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world environments, especially in management and supply chain disciplines,” he explains.

Passionate about giving back, Mr Shokane remains committed to supporting the next generation of graduates. He has expressed a willingness to serve as a guest lecturer and mentor, sharing practical industry insights and experiences that can help bridge the gap between classroom learning and the workplace.

He also encourages fellow alumni to remain actively involved with their alma mater, noting that alumni success stories inspire current students and demonstrate what is possible through education, determination, and hard work.

For prospective students considering VUT, Mr Shokane highlights the University’s supportive environment, accessible facilities, and the affordability of living in the Vaal region. Above all, however, he encourages students never to give up on their goals.

“Challenges may appear impossible when you are facing them, but success comes through determination and persistence,” he says.

Drawing inspiration from former President Nelson Mandela’s famous words, Mr Shokane reminds students that, “It always looks impossible until it is done.”

As VUT celebrates its 60th anniversary, alumni such as Mr Shokane continue to demonstrate the University’s enduring legacy of producing graduates who lead with purpose, contribute meaningfully to society, and create opportunities for others. His journey from student to industry leader and entrepreneur serves as a powerful reminder that success is not defined by where one starts, but by the commitment to keep growing, learning, and striving for excellence.

For six decades, VUT has been shaping talent and inspiring thought. Through alumni such as Mr Shokane, that legacy continues to thrive and inspire future generations.
