Grade 12 learners at Vaal High School received valuable insight into their future academic possibilities when the Student Recruitment Department from the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) visited the school on Wednesday, 4 March to share information about study opportunities offered by the University.
The visit formed part of VUT’s ongoing student recruitment programme and its broader Road to 60 campaign, a journey that celebrates nearly six decades of shaping skilled graduates while continuing to inspire the next generation of innovators, professionals and builders of society.
The session was opened by Student Recruitment Practitioner Ms Dimakatso Motaung, who welcomed learners and introduced the visiting delegation. Learners were encouraged to view the engagement as an opportunity to learn more about the programmes, faculties and career pathways available at VUT.
The school’s Departmental Head for Humanities, Mr Pule Pule, highlighted the significance of the visit and reminded learners that dedication and commitment to their studies remain key to achieving success. He also proudly noted that the school has one of VUT’s alumni among its staff, Mr Mvakade Kamva Future, who currently serves as the Departmental Head for Technical Sciences.
Mr Kamva studied Civil Engineering at VUT before furthering his studies with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). His academic journey was shared as a powerful example of how education and determination can shape a successful career path.
Addressing the learners, Acting Head of Student Recruitment Ms Lucy Mohoto encouraged the Grade 12 class to begin imagining themselves as future innovators, engineers, technologists and leaders. She explained that VUT continues to provide programmes designed to equip students with practical skills and knowledge needed to contribute meaningfully to the economy and society.
Learners were also reminded that applications to study at VUT can be submitted through the University’s online application system.
During the presentation, learners were introduced to the wide range of programmes offered across the University’s faculties. Ms Motaung provided an overview of study opportunities within the Faculties of Human Sciences and Management Sciences, while Recruitment Officer Mr Sennanyane Masike expanded on programmes available in Engineering and Applied Sciences, outlining subject requirements and the career paths associated with these fields.
To make the session interactive and engaging, Student Recruiter Ms Morongwe Miya, together with Senior Administrator for Student Recruitment Ms Juliet Hector, asked learners questions based on the information presented. Learners who answered correctly received small giveaways, adding energy and enthusiasm to the engagement.
The event was also attended by representatives from VUT FM, bringing additional excitement and visibility to the programme.
Some learners shared their reflections following the session. Mr Nathan Paladli described the engagement as “fun and eye catching,” while Ms Precious Sello said the session was “productive and enjoyable,” noting that it helped learners better understand the opportunities available at VUT.
In closing, Ms Motaung thanked the school management, educators and learners for their warm reception and participation. Mr Kamva encouraged the Grade 12 learners to remain focused on their studies and to pursue their ambitions with determination. Reflecting on his own journey, he expressed appreciation for the role that VUT played in shaping his career and urged learners to take advantage of the opportunities available to them.
The visit forms part of the University’s broader commitment to guiding prospective students and empowering young people with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their future, as the Vaal University of Technology continues its journey on the Road to 60.
