The Community Engagement Department of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) hosted the Basebetsi Buang wellness workshop on 11 June 2026, creating a platform for employees to voice concerns, share workplace challenges and engage directly with stakeholders on issues affecting their wellbeing and working conditions. The initiative formed part of VUT’s ongoing commitment to employee wellness and empowerment, providing staff members with an opportunity to engage openly on matters affecting their professional and personal wellbeing while exploring practical solutions through collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
Community Engagement Director, Mr Joseph Radebe, assured employees that the workshop was not a union-driven initiative but rather a response to the department’s recognition of the need to prioritise employee wellbeing across the institution. He explained that the workshop was designed to bring together relevant stakeholders who could engage directly with employees and help address challenges encountered in the workplace.
Encouraging employees to participate actively, Mr Radebe emphasised the importance of creating spaces where staff members can speak openly about their experiences and contribute towards finding solutions. “And when we are united, we will be able to persuade all the agendas and solve them with relevant stakeholders,” he said.
Among the employees who shared their experiences was Ms Pulane Mofokeng from the Garden Services unit. She highlighted the challenges associated with increasing workloads, limited resources and staff shortages, noting that these factors often place additional pressure on employees.
Ms Mofokeng also stressed the importance of mental wellbeing and safe working environments. She raised concerns about workspace limitations, hygiene standards and the need for facilities that adequately support employees in their daily responsibilities. While expressing gratitude for employment opportunities, she also reflected on the uncertainty experienced by contract employees.
“I am grateful that I am working, but at the same time I have no assurance that I will be retained forever,” she said.
The workshop featured presentations and engagements from stakeholders including the VUT Campus Clinic, VUT Law Clinic, VUT HR Wellness Office, Sanlam, Assupol and the Gauteng Department of Social Development. Discussions focused on financial wellness, employee benefits, mental health, stress management, workplace wellness, legal rights and access to support services.
These sessions provided employees with practical information and resources aimed at improving their overall wellbeing while creating greater awareness of the support structures available both within and outside the University.
The workshop concluded on a positive note, reinforcing the importance of creating platforms where employees can openly share their experiences and contribute towards improving workplace conditions. By bringing together staff members and key stakeholders, the Basebetsi Buang wellness workshop not only highlighted existing challenges but also encouraged constructive dialogue and collaborative problem-solving.
As VUT advances its Strategy 2033+ and continues its Road to 60 journey, initiatives such as the Basebetsi Buang wellness workshop demonstrate the University’s commitment to fostering a supportive, inclusive and people-centred workplace. By investing in employee wellbeing and creating opportunities for meaningful engagement, VUT continues to strengthen the foundation for a resilient institution and a thriving workforce.
