VUT welcomes Mr Kabi Tumelo Metsing as Employee Wellness Specialist

The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) is proud to announce the appointment of Mr Kabi Tumelo Metsing as its new Employee Wellness Specialist. Though new to this position, Mr Metsing is no stranger to the institution, having previously served in Student Counselling and Support as a Social Worker within Student Support Services. He now returns to VUT with a renewed focus on advancing staff wellness.

Mr Metsing brings extensive experience and a strong record of achievement in employee wellness, having worked at some of South Africa’s most respected institutions. His academic journey began at Madibane High School, after which he pursued tertiary studies at the University of Johannesburg (formerly RAU). In 2011, he deepened his expertise by completing a Master’s degree in Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) at the University of Pretoria (UP).

His professional career spans key roles at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), the Gauteng Provincial Government, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. This diverse background has provided him with valuable insight into the complexities of employee wellness across different organisational environments.

Reflecting on his career, Mr Metsing emphasised the importance of strong relationships as the foundation of professional and personal success. Quoting an African proverb, he explained: “Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu” – a person is a person through other people. This saying highlights the importance of community and relationships in shaping one’s humanity.

While acknowledging the challenges of his new role, Mr Metsing expressed optimism and determination. “My passion for employee wellness remains unwavering. I believe that a healthy workforce is a productive and engaged workforce. I am committed to working with you to build a supportive environment where everyone can thrive,” he said.

He further encouraged staff to engage directly with him on any wellness-related concerns, ideas, or suggestions, stressing that wellness is not an individual responsibility but a shared priority. “Together, we can make wellness a collective journey,” he added.

As he steps into this new chapter at VUT, Mr Metsing brings expertise, resilience, and a spirit of collaboration and care. His return signals the university’s strengthened commitment to staff wellness and to creating a healthier, more supportive workplace for all.
