VUT’s 60th generation welcomes first ever Communication Studies graduates as a new era begins

For six decades, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) has stood as a pillar of technical excellence, shaping a legacy rooted in innovation and applied science. A Diamond Jubilee is not merely a moment of reflection, it is a declaration of intent. On 20 April 2026, that intent found expression as VUT’s first ever cohort of Bachelor of Communication Studies graduates crossed the stage.

As the University celebrates its 60th anniversary, this class of pioneers emerges as a powerful bridge between legacy and future, carrying forward the weight of institutional history while stepping into an era defined by new narratives, digital transformation, and the power of human connection.

VUT has long mastered the language of engineering and technology. Yet, in a rapidly evolving world, the University recognised that technical expertise alone is no longer sufficient. In an age where information moves at speed, its value lies not only in its creation, but in its clarity, accessibility, and impact.

The introduction of the Bachelor of Communication Studies was a deliberate and strategic response to this shift. It reflects an evolution in VUT’s mission, positioning graduates as critical connectors between complex innovation and society. More than an academic offering, the programme represents a reimagining of how knowledge is translated into meaning, influence, and engagement.

Reflecting on this milestone, cum laude graduate Ms Phemelo Karabo Selepe described her journey within the inaugural cohort as both challenging and transformative. Without the guidance of senior students, she relied on her faith, the support of her mother, and the encouragement of academic staff to navigate the unknown.

She spoke with pride about being part of the first cohort, noting that the programme demanded creativity and pushed her beyond her initial career ambitions in broadcasting. The experience expanded her perspective and equipped her with a broader understanding of the communication field.

Throughout her journey, Ms Selepe remained grounded and determined. Her message to future students is one of resilience and focus, urging them to remain committed to their goals despite distractions. She leaves her peers with a simple yet profound reflection: “Dance to the song of life according to your own tune.”

Beyond academic achievement, this inaugural group has already left a distinct imprint on the University. Through their understanding of strategic communication and digital media, they have contributed to shaping how stories within the institution are told and experienced. Their presence has strengthened the culture of connection, bringing a renewed sense of voice and identity across the campus community.

As they step into the professional world, they carry with them more than qualifications. They carry the responsibility of being first, of setting a standard, and of opening doors for those who will follow.

To those who remain within the University, this moment is both an invitation and a challenge. You are not simply inheriting a programme, you are inheriting a legacy built on courage, innovation, and the willingness to lead without precedent.

As VUT marks its 60th milestone, this graduation stands as a powerful reminder that institutions endure not only through tradition, but through transformation. The Bachelor of Communication Studies is more than a qualification. It is the bridge between a proud technical past and a dynamic, digitally driven future.

To the class of pioneers, your place in history is secured. Your journey has only just begun.
