For Mr Itumeleng Mariti, born in Qwaqwa in the Free State, graduation at the VUT Spring Graduations marks the fulfilment of a childhood dream fuelled by a love of science and technology. Having always been fascinated by the futuristic worlds of science fiction, he discovered Metallurgical Engineering at a career fair during high school. That spark of interest grew into a reality, and today he proudly holds a Diploma in Metallurgical Engineering from the Vaal University of Technology (VUT).
But beyond the laboratory, Mr Mariti’s university journey has also been defined by a very different passion, Dancesport. “The stylish costumes, elegance, fun, and poise the dancers had when performing is what drew me into the sport,” he reflected. For him, dance became more than recreation; it was a way to thrive academically. “I regarded training as a break from academics. After sweating and de-stressing, I would have a clear mind to study.”
One of Mr Mariti’s most memorable experiences as a student athlete was competing at the University Sports South Africa (USSA) championships. Balancing the demands of a challenging engineering programme with competitive sport was never easy, but his support structure kept him grounded. “My parents were my support throughout the tough times,” he said with gratitude.
Graduating is one of the milestones he treasures most, and he credits both education and sport for shaping him into a resilient and disciplined individual.
Mr Mariti encourages current and future VUT students to embrace both academics and sport wholeheartedly. “Always do your best in everything you pursue. Treat your sport of choice as a fun distraction to de-stress from your academics. This way, you end up with a system that is beneficial to both.”
While the future remains open ended, one thing is certain: Dancesport will continue to be a central part of Mr Mariti’s life. “I plan to keep on dancing for many years to come. I’ve fallen in love with Dancesport to the point where I’m willing to balance it with my future endeavours. I’m planning to keep training and participating in competitions.”
Reflecting on his journey, Mr Mariti describes it in one word: “Thrilling.” “The journey is scary but pleasurable as you face challenges daily. In the end, you learn and grow from each obstacle.”
From the laboratories of Metallurgy to the dazzling stages of Dancesport, Itumeleng Mariti is proof that passion, balance, and determination can turn dreams into reality.
