On 18 September 2025, the newly established student structure, Behind the Canvas, at Vaal University of Technology (VUT), hosted its inaugural “Sip and Paint” event. Organised with assistance from Student Support Services (SSS), the event marked an exciting milestone for this student-led initiative.
Behind the Canvas was founded by seven dedicated third-year Fine Art students who share an immense passion for art and creative expression. Driven by this enthusiasm, the group aims to cultivate an art-friendly environment at VUT where students from all faculties can come together. The “Sip and Paint” event was the first step in this journey, creating a vibrant platform where students could explore their artistic talents while enjoying a relaxed and social atmosphere.
The event transformed a campus space into a lively and inspiring environment filled with eager participants. Students were encouraged to express themselves through painting, using blank canvases to capture their unique experiences, perspectives, and motivations. The creative energy was visible as individuals from different academic backgrounds found common ground through their shared love of art.
More than just an art session, the “Sip and Paint” proved to be a therapeutic experience for many attendees. It provided a safe and welcoming environment where students could channel their emotions into their artwork, allowing self-expression to transcend traditional academic settings. This innovative approach promoted mental well-being while fostering a sense of community and support among participants.
The success of this first event has laid a strong foundation for Behind the Canvas to continue its mission of encouraging creativity, inclusivity, and healing through art at VUT. The founders hope to expand their reach by hosting more events that inspire students to explore their artistic potential and build meaningful connections across campus.
