On 26 September 2025, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) welcomed learners from Lekoa Shandu High School and Thuto Lore High School to its Vanderbijlpark campus for an engaging career guidance programme. The initiative was designed to expose mathematics and science learners to diverse engineering fields while offering clarity on the academic requirements for higher education.
The sessions were led by experts from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology. Mr Edward Modima, a lecturer in Chemical Engineering, opened the programme, followed by Ms Nkele Baloi from Metallurgical Engineering, who provided a detailed overview of her field, highlighting both its opportunities and challenges. Ms Shonisani Muthubi, a VUT technologist, offered practical insights into laboratory sciences, drawing clear links to the learners’ school subjects.
Professor Kabuba Tshilenge, Acting Head of Department for Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering, inspired the learners by emphasising that VUT graduates are highly employable, with many securing positions at leading companies such as Sasol and ArcelorMittal.
From the Student Recruitment department, Ms Dimakatso Motaung outlined the importance of strong mathematics results, particularly achieving Level 4 or higher, and explained the admission point score (APS) requirements for engineering courses. She also highlighted alternative academic pathways, such as upgrading results or completing N1–N6 qualifications before applying to university.
To keep learners energised, Academic Adviser Ms Philing Maetla facilitated an interactive icebreaker and reminded them of the importance of leadership, prayer, and perseverance. Practical guidance was further reinforced by Ms Relebogile Malokase, who demonstrated the online application process in one of VUT’s computer laboratories.
The event successfully blended career guidance, motivational talks, and hands-on training. Learners left better informed and more inspired about their future. By bridging the gap between schools and higher education, VUT reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing the next generation of engineers and leaders.
