VUT tourism management students engage with industry leaders on accessible tourism and inclusion

On 14 October 2025, the Department of Tourism Management and Integrated Communication at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) hosted an engaging guest lecture for first- and second-year students. The event featured distinguished industry experts Dr Tawanda Makuyana, Adjunct Associate Professor in the Faculty of Human Sciences at VUT, and Dr Mpho Ramoliki, Acting Manager for Tourism Marketing at the Free State Gambling, Liquor and Tourism Agency (FSGLTA).

Programme Director Vhutshilo Mukundamago, Lecturer and Programme Coordinator for Tourism Management, explained that the session sought to inspire and enrich the academic journey of students through exposure to real-world experiences and professional mentorship.

In his address, Dr Makuyana highlighted his pioneering work in establishing a research niche focused on Accessible Tourism. As cofounder, chair and lead strategist of the African Networks Association of Tourism and Hospitality Sector (ANATHS), a South African nonprofit organisation, he continues to drive efforts to promote disability inclusion in tourism and hospitality education, community engagement, and industry collaboration.

Reflecting on his professional journey, Dr Makuyana emphasised the importance of purpose-driven leadership, stating, “Don’t pursue money; pursue solving a problem, because that is when money will start to follow.”

Also in attendance was Professor Lekauta, Head of Department for Tourism, who extended her appreciation to the guest lecturers and organisers. She reaffirmed the University’s commitment to hosting guest lectures annually as a critical platform to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry realities. According to Prof Lekauta, such engagements are instrumental in equipping students with the practical insights and skills required to thrive in an evolving tourism landscape.

Sharing his own story, Dr Ramoliki, a proud VUT alumnus, recounted his journey from Tumahole, Parys, to a leadership position within the tourism sector.  He began his studies at VUT in 2001, when it was still known as Vaal Technikon, progressing from a diploma to a master’s degree before earning his PhD at North-West University. His inspiring trajectory of perseverance and commitment resonated deeply with students, serving as a reminder that success is born from passion and persistence.

The guest lecture reaffirmed VUT’s commitment to nurturing future leaders through experiential learning, academic excellence, and meaningful engagement with the tourism industry, advancing the Innovation and Impact pillar of Strategy 2033+.
