An inheritance that cannot be taken away: VUT honours Sylvester Moss Tauws

Graduation is often a moment filled with applause, celebration, and the promise of what lies ahead. Yet, for the family of Sylvester Moss Tau, it was also a moment of reflection, memory, and quiet pride. A moment where absence was deeply felt, but presence lingered in every step taken on his behalf.
At the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), his name was called among the 60th generation of graduates, and though he was not there to walk the stage, his journey reached its destination. He was posthumously awarded an Advanced Diploma in Public Relations Management, a qualification earned through dedication, belief, and a spirit that continues to echo across campus.
To those who knew him, Moss was more than a student. He was energy, warmth, and light. The kind of person who entered a room and changed its atmosphere without trying. Born and raised in Kimberley, his path to VUT was shaped by a deep love for communication and a natural ability to connect with people.
He had already completed his Diploma and chose to continue his studies, refining his craft in Public Relations. For him, education was not simply a step forward, it was a calling, a way of shaping a future that extended beyond himself.
University life, for Moss, was never confined to lecture halls. It was a space where his personality could unfold. Many remember him from 2017, when he placed second in VUT’s Got Talent, a moment that revealed his gift as a vocalist and confirmed what many already knew, that he carried something special.
“Sylvester was very career driven and a very positive person,” his sister, Ms Dineo Tau, shared softly. “When he walked into a room, he brought light. He motivated people. There was never a dull moment with him.”
His strength was rooted in something deeper. Raised in a humble, faith grounded family, he carried with him a belief that education was the greatest inheritance one could receive. It was a value passed down by his grandmother, a quiet philosophy that shaped the way he lived and pursued his dreams.
“The only legacy my grandmother spoke about was education,” Ms Dineo Tau said. “She would say, ‘I do not have gold or diamonds, but education is yours, and no one can take it away from you.’ Moss lived that truth.”
Even in his absence, his presence was felt in the smallest, most human details. His family recalls how he had already shared the news of his graduation in their group chat, full of excitement, already preparing for the day, even choosing what he would wear. In those moments, it is clear that he had already arrived at this milestone in spirit.
For his family, for the University, and for all who knew him, this was more than a ceremony. It was a continuation of a life that still speaks.
As the 2026 graduates step forward into their futures, Moss’s story remains, not as one of loss alone, but as one of meaning. A reminder that education does not end with the individual. It carries forward, shaping families, communities, and generations.
In the end, what remains is what he believed in most, a legacy that cannot be taken away. A permanent inheritance.
And as his family described the day, through both tears and pride, it was still, in his own words, simply this: “A blessed day.”
