Sometimes all it takes to change a young person’s future is a single opportunity to witness greatness up close. For Ms Bonang Meletse, a learner from Mafori Mphahlele High School in Soweto, attending the National Science Month (NSM) 2026 launch at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park Campus in Sebokeng on 4 July 2026 became more than just a school outing. It became a life changing experience that strengthened her dreams and renewed her determination to succeed.
As part of South Africa’s inaugural NSM, the launch brought together learners, educators, researchers, innovators and industry stakeholders to celebrate science, technology and innovation while inspiring more young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Surrounded by innovators, academics, scientists and fellow learners, Ms Meletse was inspired by the stories of individuals who have transformed their passion for science into successful careers. The event exposed learners to the endless possibilities that STEM offers, encouraging them to pursue their ambitions with confidence.
A mathematics learner at Mafori Mphahlele High School, Ms Meletse described the experience as both eye opening and motivational.
“The programme helped me a lot because I had the opportunity to see achievements that one day I wish to see myself in. It made me realise that my dreams are possible if I remain focused and work hard. When that day finally comes, I will be ready to face the world,” she said.
Her heartfelt words captured the purpose of NSM, which seeks to inspire young people to believe in their potential while equipping them with the knowledge, confidence and curiosity needed to become the next generation of scientists, engineers, researchers and innovators.
The launch featured more than 140 interactive exhibitions and demonstrations, providing learners with opportunities to engage directly with researchers, academics, industry experts and innovators. Through these experiences, they gained valuable insight into careers in science and technology while discovering how research and innovation can help solve real world challenges.
For Ms Meletse, the event represented much more than a day of learning. It reinforced the belief that success begins with self-confidence, hard work and a willingness to embrace every opportunity. Her story reflects the hopes of countless young South Africans who aspire to make meaningful contributions to their communities and the country through education.
As NSM continues to inspire learners across the country throughout July, Ms Meletse leaves with a renewed sense of purpose and a clear vision for her future. With determination, resilience and the motivation sparked at VUT, she is one step closer to turning her aspirations into reality.
