Meet Elizabeth Mihlava Mboweni, a Vaal University of Technology Logistics student who earned her Advanced Diploma cum laude and gained life-changing international exposure in the United Kingdom.

There are moments in a student’s journey when achievement stretches beyond marks on a transcript and begins to shape a life’s direction. For Ms Elizabeth Mihlava Mboweni, that moment arrived on 24 April 2026, when she graduated with an Advanced Diploma in Logistics cum laude at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), marking both academic excellence and the opening of a wider, global horizon.

Raised in Diepkloof Zone 2 in Soweto, Ms Mboweni’s journey reflects quiet determination and an unrelenting pursuit of growth. She began her studies at VUT with a diploma in Logistics, steadily building her academic foundation before advancing to higher-level study. Each step was deliberate, guided by a clear ambition to position herself within an increasingly competitive and globally connected logistics industry.

Her academic success was matched by a rare opportunity to step beyond South Africa’s borders. Through an international academic exchange to the United Kingdom, Ms Mboweni was exposed to institutions that have shaped global thought for centuries, including University of Oxford and University of Cambridge. These visits were not merely symbolic. They offered a lived experience of academic excellence at its highest level, placing her within spaces where ideas are contested, refined, and transformed into global influence.

Her journey also extended into the corridors of governance. A visit to UK Parliament provided insight into political systems and legislative processes, allowing her to draw comparisons between international governance frameworks and those at home in South Africa. It was an experience that deepened her understanding of how policy, infrastructure, and logistics intersect in shaping economies.

Reflecting on this chapter of her journey, Ms Mboweni spoke with humility about the role the University played in opening these doors. “I am grateful for the opportunity to travel to the United Kingdom. Even though it was not directly arranged by the University, being part of VUT placed me in a position where such an opportunity became possible,” she said. Her words capture a broader truth about higher education, that the value of an institution lies not only in what it teaches, but in the pathways it unlocks.

Her experience stands as a powerful example of how exposure to global environments equips students to adapt, engage, and lead beyond familiar borders. It is within these unfamiliar spaces that confidence is tested, perspectives are expanded, and ambition is refined into purpose.

Looking ahead, Ms Mboweni envisions a future within the logistics sector that extends beyond national boundaries. With a strong academic record and international exposure shaping her outlook, she is poised to contribute meaningfully to an industry that underpins global trade and economic development.

Her story is not simply one of personal success. It reflects the broader ethos of VUT, where academic excellence meets opportunity, and where students are prepared not only to graduate, but to step into the world with clarity, courage, and a sense of purpose.
