Empowering future accountants: VUT hosts the 2025 Accountancy Students’ Conference

The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) hosted its annual Accountancy Students’ Conference on 9 October 2025 at the Great Desmond Tutu Hall under the theme “Empowering Future Accountants through Ethics, Technology and Collaboration.” The event brought together students, academics and industry professionals to inspire and prepare the next generation of accountants for a rapidly evolving financial landscape.

The conference began with a warm welcome from Dr Ronel Cassim, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Accountancy, followed by an address from the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Khehla Ndlovu. He expressed gratitude to Professor Chengendzai Mafini, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, and his team for their dedication to creating impactful learning platforms. Professor Ndlovu reminded students that success begins with self-mastery, stating, “The experience of managing others starts with managing yourself.” He encouraged them to cultivate discipline, accountability and leadership, qualities essential for growth in both personal and professional spheres.

In his address, Professor Mafini reflected on his own journey as a student, urging attendees to remain resilient and proactive in their pursuits. He emphasised that the Faculty of Management Sciences aims to produce graduates who are not only technically proficient but also ethically grounded and future-focused. “Do not wait for doors to open,” he advised. “Create doors that opportunity can knock on.”

The programme, guided by the energetic Master of Ceremonies, Mr Collins Mathadisa, featured three sessions led by distinguished speakers who shared valuable insights connecting academic learning to real-world practice.

The first session, introduced by Mr Letshaba Sejake, Lecturer in Accountancy, featured Mr Amos Mojapelo, Funds Financial Manager at Rand Water; Ms Gloria Khasake, Accounts Payable Specialist at Impala Platinum; and Mr Mziwakhe Xakaza, Group Risk Manager at Liquid Technology. Mr Mojapelo, a proud VUT alumnus, shared his journey from studying Cost and Management Accounting at the then Vaal Technikon to his current leadership role, recalling his role in founding the Students Association for Cost and Management Accounting (SACOMA). Ms Khasake encouraged students to value education as a discipline that builds endurance and credibility, while Mr Xakaza underscored the importance of continuous professional development and ethical conduct as the foundation of trust in accounting.

The second session, introduced by Ms Kedibone Muroa, featured Mr Blessing Mayeza, Business Development Manager at the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants; Ms Karabo Tshweu, Retail Business Management student and Enactus representative; and Mr Letlotlo Masakale, Audit Manager at SizweNtsalubaGobodo Grant Thornton. Mr Mayeza discussed how technology is reshaping financial systems and professional practice, urging students to view failure as a learning opportunity. Ms Tshweu inspired her peers to use innovation and entrepreneurship to solve social challenges, while Mr Masakale highlighted the need to master digital tools and strengthen analytical competencies.

The final session, facilitated by Dr Natasha Robbetze, Senior Lecturer, focused on collaboration and featured Mr Lehlogonolo Mmopane, Grant Specialist at the Finance and Accounting Services Sector Education and Training Authority, and Mr Thabiso Lebetha, Credit Controller at Tiger Brands. Mr Mmopane shared his unconventional yet fulfilling journey in accounting, attributing his success to perseverance and seizing opportunities. Mr Lebetha spoke about applying academic knowledge in corporate environments, stressing teamwork, communication and mutual support as essential for success.

Following the panel discussions, Mr Emmanuel Mphelo from the Centre for Academic Development showcased how academic support initiatives such as tutoring and workshops enhance student performance and employability. A lively question-and-answer session allowed students to interact directly with speakers, deepening their understanding of the day’s themes.

The conference concluded with the announcement of the 2025 Semester Awards, recognising top-performing students in Internal Auditing, Cost and Management Accounting, and Financial Information Systems across various qualification levels. Professor Maseko, Head of the Department of Accountancy, delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks to all contributors, marking a fitting end to a day that celebrated excellence, growth and empowerment.
