Recently, the Enactus Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Team participated in the Enactus South Africa National Expo 2025, held at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. This annual competition brings together top university student teams to showcase innovative social entrepreneurship projects and businesses that address real-world challenges aligned with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals.
The Enactus South Africa National Expo unites leading student innovators, educators and industry leaders to highlight youth-driven entrepreneurial projects that make a tangible impact in communities. As the highlight of the Enactus calendar, the event celebrates student achievements, fosters the exchange of ideas, builds partnerships and selects the winning university team to represent South Africa at the Enactus World Cup. More than just a competition, it is a platform for inspiration, collaboration and meaningful progress.
At the event, the Enactus VUT team received several awards from the Harmony Food Security and MTN competitions, with standout students recognised for their innovation and leadership. Mr Thabang Sereo, a third-year Information Technology (IT) student, won R8 000 and a trophy for securing third place in the Harmony Special Competition with his project, Fresh Farm Connect, a digital platform that connects small farmers directly with consumers and local markets, enhancing food security and supply chain transparency.
Ms Eve Macicane, also a third-year IT student, was the second-place winner in the MTN SA Foundation Special Competition, receiving R25 000 and a brand-new laptop for her app, Livre, which links gender-based violence (GBV) victims and survivors with organisations offering legal, counselling and financial support. Additionally, Mr Neo Malukele, a third-year Human Resource Management student, received the 2025 Enactus South Africa Award for Excellence in Financial Management, recognising her outstanding financial leadership and dedication within the Enactus VUT team.
Mrs Onica Matsheke, a Human Resources Department lecturer at VUT, extended heartfelt appreciation to Dr Sibusiso Mchunu, Executive Director of Student Support Services (SSS), Ms Reanetswe Tsotetsi, an administrative support official at SSS, and all staff members within the department. “On behalf of the Enactus VUT team, we would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation for the generous support in providing transport and accommodation for our participants during the recent Enactus National Exposition,” she said.
“Your contribution played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of the Enactus VUT team’s involvement in this enriching event. By covering essential logistical needs, you not only eased the financial burden but also enabled the team to focus fully on showcasing their innovative ideas and developing critical entrepreneurial skills. Such support greatly contributes to the personal and professional growth of the Enactus VUT team, as it reflects the department’s continued commitment to empowering student development beyond the classroom. Thank you once again for your invaluable assistance. We look forward to continued collaboration in the future.”
The Enactus VUT team also had an opportunity to engage with executives and representatives from South Africa’s leading organisations, including the South African Breweries (SAB) Foundation, MTN SA Foundation, Schneider Electric, American International Group Inc. (AIG), Ford Motor Company and Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (Harmony). Hearing their insights on leadership, innovation and impact broadened the students’ perspectives and reminded them of the opportunities that arise when passion meets purpose.
Mrs Matsheke added, “Although the Enactus VUT team and the 12 other university teams did not present their businesses at the 2025 expo, the team members were recognised with awards from special competitions, acknowledging their hard work and dedication. This recognition encouraged them to strive for excellence in 2025 and beyond.
