On 26 March 2025, the Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences (FACS) at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) hosted a vibrant postgraduate orientation event at the Centre for Academic Development (CAD) auditorium. The event marked the beginning of an exciting academic journey for postgraduate students, setting the stage for their research pursuits.
The orientation opened with an engaging introduction to the faculty’s departments, management, and support staff, ensuring that students were well-informed and prepared to navigate their academic and research pathways. The Executive Dean of the Faculty, Professor Christa Grobler, delivered an inspiring address, assuring students of the faculty’s unwavering support.
“You have our full commitment—from faculty management to your supervisors and peers. We recognise the challenges within a sometimes-imperfect system, but rest assured, we are here to guide and support you every step of the way,” emphasised Prof Grobler.
Prof Grobler likened research to an exciting expedition, encouraging students to embrace their academic journey with curiosity, passion, and determination. “Research is a journey of exploration. As knowledge explorers, you will experience moments of departure, travel, derailment, and recovery. You will encounter trial and error, but ultimately, you will arrive at your destination, armed with discoveries that will shape the future,” she said.
Distinguished doctors and faculty professors shared valuable insights on producing impactful research and expressed their enthusiasm for supporting students throughout this transformative journey.
Additionally, the Internationalisation Office and the Library pledged their full support to the postgraduate cohort. “Our doors are always open,” they assured. From assisting international students with pre-study requirements to providing access to online journals and research resources, these departments are committed to empowering students with the tools needed to excel in their academic pursuits.
The event was not only focused on academic preparation but also celebrated connection and collaboration. An interactive “Introduce Yourself” session allowed students to meet and network with their peers across departments, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. These interactions laid the groundwork for future collaborations and mutual support as they progress through their research journeys.
With a strong network of support from faculty, staff, and fellow students, the postgraduate students of FACS at VUT are set to embark on a rewarding academic adventure—one filled with discovery, innovation, and success.
