The Desmond Tutu Great Hall stood alive with emotion this April, as the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) celebrated not only academic achievement, but a defining milestone in its history. This year’s graduates form the 60th generation of VUT graduates, a generation shaped by resilience, purpose, and the weight of legacy.
Among the many stories that unfolded, one carried a quiet strength, the journey of Ms Puseletso Mokgatla from Klerksdorp.
Her path was shaped by more than academic pursuit. It was a journey of balance, where the demands of Information Technology studies met the discipline of sport. Each day called for focus and sacrifice, and the ability to keep moving forward even when energy ran low and doubt began to surface.
For her, success was never a straight line. It was built in early mornings and tested in moments of exhaustion. It lived in lecture rooms and on the field, in deadlines met and training sessions completed. Where others might have paused, she pressed on, guided by purpose.
Driven by a passion for technology, she remained committed to her academic journey, while her dedication to athletics required equal resolve. It was a delicate balance, one that demanded emotional strength and consistency. Yet she endured, carrying both ambitions with quiet determination.
Reflecting on her journey, her words speak to the reality many students face, but few articulate.
“Balancing sport and studies is never easy,” she said. “There are days when everything feels overwhelming, when giving up seems like the simplest option. But you have to hold on to your purpose. Let your studies guide your future, and let your passion give you strength. Discipline is what carries you when motivation fades.”
Her message resonates beyond her own experience. It speaks to a generation that has had to navigate pressure, uncertainty, and expectation, yet continues to rise.
As part of the 60th generation of VUT graduates, her story becomes part of something greater. It reflects a collective journey of perseverance and possibility, where each graduate carries forward not only their own dreams, but the legacy of an institution built over six decades.
Her achievement is not only a personal victory. It is a reminder that success is often found in the quiet decision to continue, to balance, and to believe, even when the path is not easy.
In that moment, as she walked the stage, she did not stand alone. She stood as part of a generation that defines what it means to endure, and ultimately, to succeed
