Message from the HOD
Dr John Ikome
Acting Head Of Department
Faculty of Engineering and Technology
Welcome to the Department of Industrial Engineering, Operations Management and Mechanical Engineering (IEOMME) within the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the Vaal University of Technology. It is our pleasure to welcome prospective students, industry partners, researchers, alumni, and all stakeholders to a department committed to academic excellence, innovation, and the development of highly skilled engineering professionals.
The vision of the Department is to become a leading center of excellence in engineering education, applied research, innovation, and technology-driven solutions that contribute meaningfully to industrial growth and socio-economic development in South Africa and beyond.
The Department offers programs and specializations in:
- Industrial Engineering
- Operations Management
- Mechanical Engineering
Our programs are designed to equip students with strong theoretical knowledge, practical engineering skills, problem-solving abilities, and professional competencies required by modern industries and professional bodies such as the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
The Department strongly emphasizes practical and laboratory-based learning through well-equipped laboratories, engineering workshops, simulation tools, and project-based learning activities. Students are exposed to real-world engineering challenges that prepare them for the dynamic and evolving industrial environment.
Innovation and technology form an integral part of our teaching and research activities. The Department integrates modern engineering software, advanced manufacturing systems, modelling and simulation techniques, automation, sustainable engineering practices, and emerging technologies into both undergraduate and postgraduate education.
Through Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), industry collaborations, benchmarking initiatives, and strategic partnerships, students gain valuable workplace exposure and professional experience that enhance employability and career readiness. The Department continues to strengthen relationships with industry partners to ensure that our graduates remain relevant and competitive within the engineering sector.
Student success and academic development remain central to our mission. The Department provides academic support, mentorship, research supervision, and guidance to assist students throughout their academic journey. We are committed to creating an environment that promotes growth, innovation, discipline, and excellence.
Our research activities focus on areas such as:
- Manufacturing systems and optimization
- Advanced engineering modelling and simulation
- Thermo-fluids and energy systems
- Sustainable manufacturing and renewable energy
- Operations and production management
- Engineering education and innovation
The Department also contributes actively to community engagement and socio-economic development through research projects, skills development initiatives, outreach programs, and industry-focused solutions aimed at addressing societal and engineering challenges.
What makes the IEOMME Department unique is its multidisciplinary nature, strong industry orientation, practical training approach, and commitment to producing graduates who are innovative, adaptable, and capable of contributing effectively to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).
We also provide strong support for postgraduate and doctoral students through research supervision, collaborative projects, research seminars, and opportunities for academic and professional development.
To all prospective students considering engineering as a career, we encourage you to join a field that shapes industries, drives innovation, and transforms communities. Engineering is not only a profession; it is an opportunity to solve real-world problems and contribute meaningfully to society.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Department of IEOMME at the Vaal University of Technology.
