Opening doors to international scholarships: VUT's 2025 scholarship opportunities event

On 21 August 2025, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Internationalisation Department hosted an internal scholarship opportunities event. VUT students and alumni had the chance to learn more about available scholarships, how to access these opportunities, and receive guidance on applying for scholarships abroad. Attendees could also engage directly with experts to address any challenges related to overseas scholarship applications and study opportunities.

Mr Peter Masombuka, VUT Head of Alumni Relations, warmly welcomed all the guests and attendees to the event. He expressed his gratitude for their presence and highlighted the occasion’s significance.

The first speaker, Ms Joy Nogabe, Director of International Scholarships at the Department of Higher Education (DHET), delivered an insightful presentation on a wide range of international scholarship opportunities. She provided detailed information about the countries offering these scholarships, the benefits and coverage, key application deadlines, and closing dates. Ms Nogabe also explained how scholarships for studies abroad operate, outlining the eligibility criteria and application requirements. Additionally, she guided attendees on where to find these scholarships and shared practical advice on accessing and applying for them successfully. Emphasising her commitment, she stated, “Ensuring that South Africans have the opportunity to study abroad is my greatest goal.”

Ms Anita Mnisi, Director of the Strategic Partnership Directorate at the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), was the second speaker and presented remotely via an online session. Her presentation focused on setting clear restoration targets and effectively measuring success. She also addressed the transferability and scalability of nature restoration efforts, emphasising the importance of resilience and sustainability in these initiatives to ensure a long-term positive impact. Also, Ms Mnisi explained different types of calls, outlining their objectives and associated partnerships.

She highlighted the Water4All Partnership, a funding program supporting scientific research in water-related challenges.

Before the event concluded, students could engage directly with the guest speakers, asking questions to gain further insights into scholarship opportunities. During the Q&A session, one student inquired about her application for a scholarship to Russia, mentioning that she had been offered the scholarship but had not yet been called for an interview. Ms Nogabe promptly noted the concern, contacted the relevant international scholarship offices, and ensured that the student received the necessary assistance.

Mr Prajesh Bhikha, Internationalisation Acting Manager, closed the event with warm and inspiring words, emphasising that internationalisation aims to develop empowered individual scholars and strengthen our collective capacity for knowledge and societal impact. He expressed his gratitude by stating, “Once again, I thank the international and European scholarships for their generosity and partnership. Thank you all for attending.”
