Shaping futures as thousands gather for VUT Open Day 2026

The Vaal University of Technology main campus transformed into a vibrant hub of innovation, ambition, and career exploration on 23 May 2026 as thousands of prospective students, parents, and guardians gathered for the annual Open Day.

As the University continues its Road to 60 journey ahead of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the event reflected VUT’s continued growth and strengthening reputation as a destination of choice for higher education in South Africa.

From the early morning registrations, the atmosphere was filled with excitement and anticipation. High school learners from across Gauteng and neighbouring provinces arrived eager to explore the diverse academic pathways offered by the institution, turning distant aspirations into tangible possibilities.

While Open Days are often associated with applications and administrative processes, the true significance of the experience lies in the personal moments of discovery that unfold across campus.

One such moment belonged to Mr Thabiso Mpheteng, a matriculant who arrived at VUT with a fixed plan for his future and little interest in exploring other academic fields. However, after engaging with faculty exhibitions and interacting with displays showcasing student creativity and innovation, his perspective shifted dramatically.

By the end of the visit, Mr Mpheteng realised that his interests and potential could extend beyond his original plans and into the world of Art, Design, and Theatre. Reflecting on his experience, he encouraged fellow matriculants not to delay their applications, saying: “I would tell them not to waste time. They should apply right now, as soon as they have the opportunity. That is the best advice I can give them.”

His experience served as a powerful reminder that university open days are not simply about applications, but about exposing young people to possibilities they may never have considered before.

The heartbeat of the day lay within the faculty exhibitions, where VUT’s commitment to practical, career-focused education was firmly on display. Academic staff, lecturers, support departments, and student ambassadors worked side by side to guide prospective students through qualifications, career opportunities, and academic expectations.

Across the different faculties and exhibition spaces, interactive displays, demonstrations, and laboratory showcases provided valuable insight into how academic programmes connect directly with industry and the evolving world of work.

Current students also played an important role throughout the day by sharing authentic experiences about student life, academic challenges, and the support systems available at the University. Their presence created an atmosphere of relatability and reassurance for prospective learners navigating one of the most important decisions of their lives.

For parents and guardians, the event provided clarity and reassurance regarding the transition from high school to tertiary education. University representatives and support divisions were available throughout the day to assist families with information relating to applications, funding opportunities, student support services, accommodation, and academic development.

The massive turnout reflected more than growing interest in the institution. It represented a generation of focused and determined young people seeking purpose, opportunity, and a place within a university committed to shaping future leaders and innovators.

As the day drew to a close, prospective students departed the campus carrying more than brochures and application information. They left with renewed confidence, broader perspectives, and a clearer vision of the future they hope to build at VUT.
