“Your past does not have the power to decide your future; your choices today can change the direction of your life.”
This message resonated with learners at Thuto Tiro Engineering School of Specialisation during an empowerment programme hosted by the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Community Engagement Office in partnership with the Girlie Charm Foundation.
The initiative focused on restoring the dignity of the girl child, empowering young people through education, and encouraging learners to rise above adversity. It created a platform for learners to believe in themselves, take their education seriously and make responsible decisions that will shape their futures.
The programme opened with the national anthem and a prayer, creating an atmosphere of unity and reflection. Programme director Mr Pule Motsoaledi set the tone with a message on discipline, respect and the value of education.
Addressing learners, Mr Motsoaledi urged them to respect their teachers and remain focused on their academic journeys. He cautioned them against allowing peer pressure to influence their decisions, reminding them that not every friendship will contribute positively to their growth.
“Take your education seriously and respect those who are guiding you,” he said. “The decisions you make today will determine the opportunities you have tomorrow.”
Founder of the Girlie Charm Foundation, Ms Kau Mofokeng, shared a deeply personal account of what inspired her to establish the organisation. She explained that her own childhood experiences shaped her commitment to protecting, supporting and uplifting young girls.
“This organisation is a calling,” Ms Mofokeng said. “What happened to me inspired me to stand up for every girl child and make sure they know their worth.”
Ms Mofokeng said the Foundation seeks to ensure that girls receive support, protection and opportunities to regain their confidence and dignity.
The programme also featured an emotional address by actress Ms Regina Mary, whose story of resilience moved many learners and guests. She reminded learners that difficult experiences do not define their futures and encouraged them to remain hopeful, persevere and make positive choices.
Representing VUT Community Engagement, Ms Nthabiseng Mahlangu introduced learners to the University, outlining its academic programmes, opportunities and application process for prospective students.
The engagement reaffirmed VUT’s commitment to community development and youth empowerment through initiatives that promote education, inspire ambition and support social transformation.
Through partnerships such as this, VUT continues to demonstrate that education extends beyond the classroom. It can restore hope, change lives and help build a brighter future for communities.
