The Sport Management Section of the Department of Marketing, Retail Business and Sport Management at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) proudly took part in the Heritage Day celebrations of Ikhwezilokusa Psychiatric Home, situated in De Deur, on Tuesday, 23 September 2026.
This meaningful outreach followed an invitation from the Department of Health’s Occupational Therapy unit, which requested VUT’s Sport Management team to provide physical and recreational support to residents. The initiative aligns with the Department’s 2024–2029 community engagement theme: Physical Activity and Recreational Literacy.
Dr Elmarie Strydom, Lecturer in the Sport Management Section, explained that each outreach initiative aims not only to deliver stimulating physical and recreational opportunities, but also to empower communities to sustain these activities long after the visit.
The day commenced with a variety of activities designed to stimulate both body and mind. Guided by staff and twelve Advanced Diploma students, residents participated enthusiastically in exercises and games. These activities were carefully structured to encourage movement, build confidence, and enhance overall well-being.
The outreach was further strengthened by the presence and support of the Head of Department, Professor Dlodlo, whose encouragement added to the sense of unity and purpose.
What stood out most, however, was the joy and connection nurtured throughout the day. Residents, students, and staff shared moments of fun and laughter, leaving behind not only cherished memories but also a foundation for future collaboration and sustained community impact.
