VUT honours choir members in a special appreciation event

On 31 July 2025, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) hosted a heartfelt event at the Main Residence Lapa to honour and appreciate the VUT Choir’s commitment and contribution to the institution. Choir members were presented with gifts from the university in recognition of their dedication and talent.

The event was attended by the Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Khehla Ndlovu, alongside members of the executive, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellors. In his address to the choir, Professor Ndlovu emphasised the importance of seizing every opportunity for growth while at university.

“It might seem like a small thing to participate in a choir because you are here as a group,” he said. “But that is the foundation for you to become a shining light. Always take the opportunity to learn a new skill while at university, it will help you in the future.”

Dr Simphiwe Nelana, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, Commercialisation and Internationalisation, delivered the purpose of the day, highlighting the importance of recognising student initiatives and the impact they make in shaping the university’s identity.

Choir leader Mr Vumile Nomanyama, who also serves as VUT’s Culture and Diversity Officer in the Student Life Department, spoke passionately about the unity and shared purpose that music brings.

“Our love for music brought us together here,” he said. “Every year, I train nearly 70% of the choir members from scratch and watching them grow is a rewarding journey.”

He also encouraged the choir to take pride in the support they receive from the university’s leadership. “The commitment that the university and its management have shown to you, and the love they have expressed, now it is your responsibility to ensure you give your best for the university.”

The occasion was a celebration of musical talent and a reminder of VUT’s commitment to nurturing holistic student development beyond the academic sphere.
