Four exceptional fighters from the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) proudly represented South Africa at the Oyama Kyokushin Karate Tournament, held on 30 November 2024, at the Mavuso Sports Centre in Eswatini. Hosted by the Oyama Kyokushin Karate of Eswatini, the event brought together elite fighters from across the continent.

The VUT team, under the leadership of Shihan Thulane Sibisi from the African Full Contact Karate Organization (AFKCO), showcased remarkable talent and discipline. Shihan Sibisi also generously funded the students’ travel expenses, enabling them to participate on this prestigious stage.

The tournament was a resounding success for the VUT contingent, with outstanding results:

  • Tumisho Thobejane (VUT student) secured 1st position in the Ladies’ Open Division.
  • Andile Masilela (VUT student) clinched 1st position in the Male Open Division.
  • Thatohatsi Sithakha triumphed with 1st position in the Ladies’ Under 60kg Division.
  • Lesedi Maseko earned 3rd position in the Male Under 70kg Division.

Reflecting on their experiences, the fighters shared their gratitude and determination:

  • Lesedi Maseko: “The tournament was a great experience. It was my first time competing internationally, and I was both scared and happy. I’m grateful for the support that made this journey possible.”
  • Andile Masilela: “It was an honour to represent South Africa on an international stage. The hospitality was exceptional, and the competition was both challenging and rewarding.”
  • Thatohatsi Sithakha: “I’m so proud of my victory. This win is a testament to my hard work, and I hope it inspires other women in karate to chase their dreams and break barriers.”

Sensei Judas, one of the team’s coaches, commended the fighters’ exceptional discipline and resilience: “These students have demonstrated the mindset of true winners, overcoming every obstacle to make us proud with their stellar performances,” he said.

This incredible achievement stands as a testament to the dedication and talent of VUT students and serves as an inspiration to the entire university community. Congratulations to the team for flying the VUT flag high!
