In a heartfelt effort to empower the local community with access to justice, the Vaal University of Technology’s (VUT) Law Clinic, in collaboration with the Community Engagement Department, hosted an informative outreach session at Kitso Development Centre in Sharpeville on 27 March. The event aimed to inform residents about the free legal services offered by the clinic, drawing a large and engaged crowd eager to learn about their rights and available legal assistance.
Kickstarting the session was Mr Lethuba Molopyane, a Supervising Attorney at the VUT Law Clinic, who welcomed attendees and introduced the clinic’s role in the community. He explained that the Law Clinic is located at VUT’s Science and Technology Park in Sebokeng and offers pro bono consultations. However, these services are reserved for individuals earning a monthly income of R7,000 or less, ensuring that those in need receive legal support without financial strain.
Following Mr Molopyane’s address, Ms Portia Dhlamini, the Principal Attorney at the Law Clinic, provided an in-depth overview of the various legal services offered. These include cases related to domestic violence, children’s court matters, maintenance issues, family law disputes, labour law concerns, and general civil litigation. She highlighted that the clinic offers consultations, assists with applications where necessary, and guides clients on the proper legal processes for their cases. She further emphasised that the clinic collaborates with all courts to ensure effective legal representation.
An interactive question-and-answer session allowed community members to voice their legal concerns, receiving valuable advice from the legal professionals present. The engagement provided a platform for residents to gain clarity on pressing legal matters affecting their daily lives.
In addition to the informative session, the VUT Law Clinic announced an upcoming event in October, Wills Week, where they will assist community members in drafting wills free of charge. This initiative aims to encourage legal preparedness and ensure families’ assets and interests are protected.
The outreach event was further enriched by the participation of the Land Rights Management Unit from Legal Aid. Mr Bright Maluleke, representing Legal Aid, provided insights into their services, which include assistance with evictions, land claims, land rights violations, and general legal advice. His presentation added depth to the session, ensuring residents were well-informed about their land and housing rights.
The community outreach session demonstrated VUT Law Clinic’s commitment to social justice and legal accessibility. By extending their expertise beyond campus borders, the clinic continues to empower communities with the legal knowledge and assistance they need to navigate complex legal issues.
