The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) ignited its journey towards a landmark 60th anniversary with an electric “Road to 60” Kick Off Festival at the VUT Isak Steyl Stadium on 21 February 2026. First year students, staff, alumni and members of the broader university community gathered for a day defined by celebration, unity and renewed purpose.
Conceived as both a dynamic welcome for the Class of 2026 and the official launch of a year-long legacy programme, the festival delivered an atmosphere charged with optimism. Music performances, sporting activities, food stalls, interactive activations and sponsored giveaways transformed the stadium into a living expression of institutional pride. It was not merely an event. It was a statement of intent.
Welcoming the new cohort, Dr Gugulethu Xaba, Executive Director of Student Support Services, reminded students that enrolling at VUT extends beyond academic registration.
“When students arrive at VUT, they are not just registering for qualifications, they are becoming part of a community that supports their growth, wellbeing and success,” he said.
Dr Xaba encouraged students to take ownership of their journeys, practise self-management and make full use of the support structures available to them. He emphasised that leadership development, social engagement and personal discipline form part of the holistic student experience that VUT seeks to cultivate.
Addressing the gathering on behalf of student leadership, Mr Nkosinathi Nkosi, Interim Student Representative Council President, welcomed first year students into the VUT family and urged them to participate actively in campus life. He reaffirmed the SRC’s commitment to advocacy and representation, calling for unity, respect and responsibility as the institution advances along its Road to 60.
The keynote address was delivered by Professor Simphiwe Nelana, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, Commercialisation and Internationalisation, who spoke on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Khehla Ndlovu. In his address, Prof Nelana framed the moment as historic.
“This is not merely an orientation. It is a moment in history,” he told the audience.
He reflected on six decades of teaching, innovation and societal contribution that have shaped VUT’s legacy, noting that the responsibility for the next chapter now rests with the Class of 2026. Describing the cohort as the “Double Jubilee generation”, he challenged them to carry forward the institution’s momentum with courage and integrity.
Prof Nelana acknowledged the diverse and often challenging journeys that brought students to VUT, including those who are the first in their families to enter higher education. He affirmed their belonging and reminded them that growth is often forged in discomfort. Declaring the 2026 academic year officially open on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, he urged students to begin building their own legacy with ambition and pride.
Administrative and Support Services departments also showcased the breadth of assistance available to students, reinforcing the University’s commitment to developing well rounded graduates equipped for leadership and impact.
Students described the festival as a powerful and inspiring start to the year. “The energy was contagious, and we are excited to be part of this celebration. Happy 60th celebration, VUT,” said Ms Otlotleng Mogaki, capturing the spirit that carried through the day.
As the festivities drew to a close, organisers expressed confidence that the Road to 60 campaign, running through to December 2026, will continue to unite students, staff and alumni around shared values and aspirations. More than an orientation, the Kick Off Festival marked the opening chapter of a defining year in the life of the University.
VUT extends its appreciation to the sponsors and partner organisations whose participation contributed to the success of the event.
