In a remarkable display of entrepreneurial prowess, Ms Tumisho Thobejane, a talented student from Vaal University of Technology (VUT), has captured international attention with her innovative business, Fooddable. This groundbreaking initiative tackles food waste and hunger by partnering with fast-food chains to convert surplus food into meals for those in need.
At the prestigious Global Student Entrepreneur Awards (GSEA) held in Pakistan on 6 February 2025, Ms Thobejane secured a place among the top five entrepreneurs. Her participation was made possible through the unwavering support of VUT’s leadership and various departments. This achievement not only highlights her dedication as an entrepreneur but also underscores her role as a global ambassador for VUT.
Originally from Katlehong in the East Rand of Gauteng, Ms Thobejane is set to be conferred with a Postgraduate Diploma in Biomedical Technology at VUT. Her entrepreneurial journey began when she founded Fooddable, which employs an innovative cashless currency system involving 3D-printed tokens. These tokens can be redeemed for meals prepared from surplus ingredients at partner restaurants—an approach that not only reduces food waste but also provides meals to those in need.
Reflecting on the support she received, Ms Thobejane expressed her gratitude: “I am deeply grateful for the incredible support I received from VUT. The contributions from the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC), Activation Office, Technology Transfer Office, and International Office were pivotal in allowing me to attend this esteemed event.”
She further described the experience as both challenging and rewarding.
