The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Applications Development Team (ADT) from the Department of Computer Sciences recently showcased its innovative Media, Information and Communication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority (MICT SETA) E-Recruitment System at a national technology symposium hosted by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) from 27–29 May 2026.
The symposium brought together students, researchers, academics, industry professionals, government representatives, and innovators from across South Africa to showcase technology-driven solutions to real-world challenges. Among the projects on display, the MICT SETA E-Recruitment System drew considerable interest for its practical application and potential to transform recruitment processes within organisations.
Developed as a comprehensive digital recruitment platform, the system streamlines the entire recruitment lifecycle, from vacancy creation and approval workflows to candidate application management, communication, selection and onboarding. As a result, organisations can improve efficiency, transparency and user experience throughout the recruitment process.
One of the highlights of the symposium was the opportunity for the VUT ADT to present the project to the Minister of Higher Education, Mr Buti Manamela. This engagement not only provided students with valuable exposure but also demonstrated the University’s commitment to developing innovative solutions that address industry needs.
Attendees responded positively to the system, commending its functionality, usability and relevance in tackling organisational recruitment challenges.
Reflecting on the experience, the student developers described the opportunity as both rewarding and memorable.
“Being given the opportunity to present our work to the Minister of Higher Education was a proud moment for us. It was rewarding to see the interest shown in our project and to represent the VUT Applications Development Team on such a platform.”
The team added that the symposium offered far more than an opportunity to exhibit their work.
“The symposium was more than just an exhibition of projects; it was an opportunity to engage with professionals, academics and fellow innovators. The experience broadened our perspective on how technology can create meaningful impact in organisations and communities.”
Equally encouraging was the response received from delegates throughout the event.
“One of the most memorable aspects of the symposium was witnessing the positive response from attendees. Knowing that people could see the value in the solution we developed made all the hard work worthwhile.”
The students further noted that the gathering reinforced the importance of collaboration and continuous learning.
“The symposium highlighted the importance of innovation, collaboration and continuous learning. It was inspiring to be part of an event that brought together individuals who are passionate about using technology to solve real-world challenges.”
Professor Tranos Zuva, Professor of Information and Communication Technology at VUT, commended the team’s achievement and emphasised the value of experiential learning in preparing students for industry.
“It is a great opportunity for our students to build real-world applications. We hope to continue empowering students with work-related development skills and future projects that prepare them for successful careers in the technology sector.”
Also in attendance was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation, Commercialisation and Internationalisation (DVC: RICI), Professor Simphiwe Nelana, who praised both the initiative and the team’s accomplishments.
“The success of the VUT ADT demonstrates the University’s commitment to fostering innovation, practical problem-solving and industry-relevant skills among our students. Platforms such as this symposium provide valuable opportunities for our students to showcase their capabilities, engage with stakeholders and contribute solutions that can make a meaningful impact in society. We are proud of their achievements and look forward to supporting more innovation-driven projects in the future.”
Beyond the MICT SETA E-Recruitment System, the VUT ADT demonstrated its capability to develop a diverse range of digital solutions for organisations across various sectors.
Consequently, the symposium served as an ideal platform to showcase the team’s technical expertise, creativity and problem-solving abilities.
The team’s successful participation further reflects VUT’s commitment to innovation, applied research and producing graduates equipped to address contemporary challenges through technology. Ultimately, the achievement reinforces the University’s growing reputation as a hub for technological innovation and student-led development while highlighting the important role of higher education institutions in driving digital transformation and socio-economic development.
