From 29 June to 3 July 2025, in Cape Town, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) made an unforgettable mark at the 2025 University Sports South Africa (USSA) Volleyball Tournament, hosted by the University of Cape Town (UCT). Representing the university with pride, the men’s and women’s volleyball teams delivered outstanding performances, bringing home medals, national recognition and individual accolades.
The VUT women’s volleyball team showcased determination and skill from the opening whistle, beginning strongly with a win against the University of Zululand (UNIZUL). They fought hard throughout the group stages but met a formidable opponent in the semi-finals against the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN), where they narrowly missed advancing to the final. Demonstrating resilience, they bounced back in the third-place playoff to secure the bronze medal, finishing among the top three in the national rankings.
On the men’s side, VUT delivered a flawless tournament run, remaining undefeated from start to finish. They overcame powerhouses like the University of Pretoria (Tuks) and UKZN with precision and strength. In the final, they once again faced UKZN and triumphed with a 3 to 1 victory, claiming the title of national university volleyball champions.
The teams’ success was further highlighted by individual brilliance, with three VUT players receiving top honours at the tournament:
· Kitu was named best attacker of the tournament and received the prestigious Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
· Kabelo was recognised as best libero for his exceptional defensive play.
· Babongile earned the title of best setter of the tournament.
These accolades reflect the high level of skill and commitment within the VUT volleyball programme.
Behind every successful team is a strong coaching staff, and VUT is no exception. Coach Elias Thekiso, Coach Lesego Molefe and Coach Ali Rabi played a key role in preparing and guiding both teams to success. Their leadership, strategy and unwavering support were instrumental in the teams’ impressive performance.
From strong teamwork to individual excellence, VUT volleyball’s achievements in Cape Town have enhanced the university’s sporting reputation and laid a strong foundation for future competitions. The university community celebrates these victories as a testament to the athletes’ discipline, passion and perseverance.
Well done to the VUT volleyball teams. Your efforts continue to uplift and inspire. Keep shining, champs!
