VUT walks for wellness and safety with “A Fun Walk to a Safer Tomorrow”

The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) took a bold step in promoting student wellness and safety through its 5 km fun run and walk event titled “A Fun Walk to a Safer Tomorrow”, held on 10 May 2025. The event brought together hundreds of students and staff in a show of unity and collective commitment to fostering a secure and healthy residence environment.

The initiative was made possible through strong collaboration among key university departments, including Protection Services, Residence Living and Learning, Student Life and Governance, the Institutional HIV and AIDS Unit (IHAU), Campus Clinic, Student Counselling and Support, Safety Management, Alumni Relations, and Stakeholder Engagement.

The 5 km route, which started at VUT Main Residence and ended at Bedworth Centre, served as a symbolic connection between student spaces and the broader community, reinforcing the importance of partnership and visibility in building safe and supportive living environments.

Support from external partners added to the success of the initiative. JOG Emfuleni provided logistical assistance, the South African Police Services (SAPS) Vereeniging ensured safety along the route, and Life is Good Ambulance accompanied participants, offering emergency medical readiness with advanced life support capabilities.

Beyond the walk, the programme featured wellness activities, including an energetic aerobics session led by a student fitness instructor, and an inspiring address by Dr Sibusiso Mchunu, Director of Student Support Services (SSS). Dr Mchunu encouraged students to take active roles in community safety and wellness, underscoring the importance of vigilance and collective responsibility.

The event highlighted VUT’s ongoing efforts to create a vibrant, safe and healthy campus experience, while strengthening ties between students, staff, and community partners. Through initiatives like this, VUT continues to prioritise the wellbeing and security of its student body.
