The Vaal University of Technology’s (VUT) Faculty of Human Sciences hosted its annual Research Awards Ceremony on 10 October 2025, recognising academic excellence, innovation, and transformative scholarship. The event honoured researchers whose work continues to advance human sciences, creativity, and social impact.

The ceremony opened with a warm welcome by Prof Susanna Burger, followed by an address from Executive Dean, Prof Lazarus Maleho, who underscored the importance of curiosity, courage, and persistence in shaping a future powered by knowledge and discovery.

“Today we celebrate not just past success but the promise of what comes next,” Prof Maleho remarked. “Research is about boldness, asking the difficult questions, challenging norms, and shaping new possibilities.” He further commended the collective efforts of staff and students in positioning the Faculty of Human Sciences as a hub of innovation and transformation.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof Desiree Smal, Vice-Dean for Teaching and Learning and Associate Professor in Fashion Design at the University of Johannesburg. Her presentation, Changing the Narrative in Sustainable Design Education, inspired academics and students to reimagine design as a tool for sustainability, ethics, and social awareness rather than aesthetics alone.

“Design,” she explained, “is not just about creating; it is about intentional change. Sustainable design asks us to consider not only what we make, but why and how we make it.” Her words resonated with global sustainability goals and reinforced VUT’s role in nurturing socially conscious thinkers who design for purpose and impact.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation, Commercialisation, and Internationalisation, Dr Simphiwe Nelana, applauded the faculty for producing research that bridges academic insight with community transformation. “Human sciences are the bridge between creativity, culture, and innovation,” he said. “Your work reminds us that progress is not only measured in technology but also in how we teach, communicate, and lead with empathy.”

Delivering a congratulatory message on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Khehla Ndlovu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning, Dr Grace Kanakana-Katumba, commended the faculty for its unwavering commitment to advancing research that addresses real-world challenges. She praised both established and emerging researchers for their pursuit of excellence and impact.

Dr Kanakana-Katumba emphasised that research excellence remains a cornerstone of VUT’s Strategy 2033+, which positions the university as a leader in innovation, sustainability, and socio-economic transformation. “Every paper published, every idea tested, and every partnership forged brings us closer to realising the transformative potential of higher education,” she said.

She also encouraged postgraduate students to view research as a lifelong journey of learning and contribution. “We must continue to pursue knowledge that uplifts communities, strengthens industries, and inspires future generations,” she added.

Awards were presented across several categories, including emerging and established researchers, postgraduate supervision, community engagement, and female research excellence. The ceremony also recognised postdoctoral fellows and staff who completed advanced degrees, further enriching the university’s research capacity.

As the Faculty continues to advance its research agenda, the VUT Human Sciences Research Awards stand as a testament to the power of inquiry, innovation, and collaboration, driving forward the institution’s vision of transforming lives through knowledge and creativity.
